Zao Island’s free Summer Concert Series provides an evening of entertainment for all to enjoy

Summer is officially here, and free live music is returning to Zao Island! Beginning at 7 p.m. every Friday, guests will be treated to free live concerts from local musicians at the amusement center’s open-air venue. This Friday’s concert featured Scott Cvelbar with his guitar, tunes, and welcoming atmosphere.

The Summer Concert Series has become a summer staple in Valpo, drawing families out with their lawn chairs for an evening of free music and community. It’s something that everyone at Zao Island looks forward to every year.

“We’re looking for a new season to come up and get people out here because they enjoy being outside. That way the kids can play the games and get them outside of the house too. Everyone is able to watch the band and enjoy their time here,” Eric McDougall, manager of Zao Island, said.

Because the concerts are free and outdoors, getting to the music and hanging out is easier than ever. This accessibility is one of the biggest keys to the concert series’ continued success.

“It helps bring people out, providing the weather is nice. If we get some rain and bad weather, a lot of times we have to bring them inside the building, and that tends to be a little more cramped. They’d rather be here when it’s outside,” McDougall said.

The concert series began the first week of June and will continue through the end of August. June’s remaining concerts include performances from blues band Vino Louden on June 19 and Santana tribute Soundz of Santana on June 26.

Attending a concert at Zao Island also gives attendees a chance to explore everything else the amusement center has to offer. From mini-golfing and go-karting to arcade games and pizza, Zao Island offers an entertaining time for the whole family.

“A lot of times people want to bring the kids in here. The kids can go off and participate in the offered activities, and they can also enjoy watching the concert. The kids are usually using the games, while the adults will sit down, have an adult beverage, and enjoy the music,” McDougall said.

Between the diverse musical performances and the variety of fun activities, Zao Island promises an evening of entertainment every Friday. The amusement center places a strong emphasis on community connection, and free events like the concert series demonstrate Zao Island’s commitment to the people who support it.
