The School City of East Chicago Board of Trustees honored five higher education institutions during its Tuesday, October 27, 2026, meeting at the Henry Gillis Vocational Center, 4001 Indianapolis Boulevard. The recognition celebrated each institution’s commitment to the district and the value these relationships bring to its schools.
For SCEC students, connections with local colleges and universities help make the possibilities after high school more visible. These partnerships support the district’s efforts to introduce young people to educational pathways, encourage exploration of career interests, and build confidence in their ability to pursue ambitious goals. Establishing those connections early can help students see continued education as an attainable next step.
Under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Stephen D. Bournés, SCEC continues to emphasize preparation for success in school and life. Maintaining productive relationships with higher education institutions supports that direction by connecting district priorities with additional expertise and resources. This collaboration provides a foundation for addressing student needs while strengthening the educational experience offered throughout the district.
The Board recognized the following institutions and their leaders:
The benefits also extend to SCEC educators. Collaboration between public schools and higher education creates opportunities to exchange ideas, draw on specialized knowledge, and connect teaching practices with the expectations students will encounter as they advance academically. Supporting the professionals who lead district classrooms contributes directly to the quality of instruction students receive.
For families, stronger ties to nearby institutions can make planning for the future more approachable. Familiarity with available educational options helps open conversations about students’ interests, their goals, and the steps needed to move forward.
By investing in these relationships, SCEC strengthens its ability to serve students today while helping prepare the graduates who will contribute their talents, skills, and leadership to East Chicago’s future.
