When a powerful storm swept through Gary and surrounding communities on August 11, 2026, it left behind more than physical damage. Families were faced with unexpected challenges, households needed essential supplies, and many residents found themselves navigating the difficult aftermath of a natural disaster. But amid the uncertainty, something remarkable happened: the community came together.
The Gary Community School Corporation (GCSC) was among those stepping forward to help meet the needs of residents, scholars, families and employees. As community organizations, businesses and individuals mobilized to distribute food, household necessities, hygiene products and other essential items, GCSC recognized an opportunity to extend that spirit of generosity to the very people who make its schools and communities stronger.
While many relief distributions took place during daytime hours, GCSC teachers and staff members were busy doing what they do best – showing up for students and continuing to serve families. Unfortunately, that meant some employees were unable to take advantage of the available resources.
Recognizing this gap, Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Stokes envisioned a way to bring those resources directly into the GCSC family. Her concept would eventually become the Angel Room, a dedicated space where donated goods and essential supplies could be made available to employees, scholars and their families experiencing hardship.
“During the storm, we witnessed firsthand how quickly life can change and how important it is to have people and resources you can depend on,” said Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Stokes. “I wanted to create something that would ensure our employees, scholars and families were not overlooked, particularly those who were working tirelessly to help others during the recovery. The Angel Room grew out of that vision. What started as a response to an immediate need has become a way for us to continue extending care, compassion and support long after the storm.”
The Angel Room represents a silver lining in the aftermath of the August 11 storm. What began as an emergency relief effort has evolved into a resource that extends beyond disaster recovery, providing ongoing assistance when unexpected needs arise.
The initiative was given its name by Chelsea Whittington, GCSC Chief of Public and Community Relations, who also helps coordinate and maintain the Angel Room to ensure donated resources remain available to those who need them.
“The name Angel Room felt fitting because that’s exactly what this initiative represents – people becoming angels to one another through acts of kindness,” said Whittington. “We saw an incredible response from the community following the storm, and we didn’t want that generosity to end when the immediate crisis passed. The Angel Room allows us to keep that spirit alive. Whether it’s helping an employee facing an unexpected hardship, a scholar who needs additional supplies or a family working through a difficult season, we want them to know that help is available and that they are not alone.”
Through the Angel Room, GCSC is building on the generosity of its community partners while creating a sustainable way to respond to the changing needs of its school community.
As the Angel Room continues to serve GCSC employees, scholars and families, donations are both welcomed and strongly encouraged. Sustaining the initiative will require continued support from community organizations, businesses, faith-based institutions, civic groups and individuals who believe in the power of giving back.
Donations of essential household items, personal care products, school-related necessities and other useful supplies can help ensure that the Angel Room remains stocked and ready to assist those facing unexpected challenges.
“We invite the entire community to continue being part of this effort,” Whittington added. “The need for assistance doesn’t disappear when a storm passes. Sometimes families experience challenges that aren’t visible to everyone else. Every donation, regardless of size, makes a difference. Together, we can ensure that the Angel Room remains a place of hope, dignity and support for the people who make up our GCSC family.”

The August 11 storm tested the strength of the Gary community, but it also revealed something powerful: the impact of neighbors helping neighbors. Through the Angel Room, Gary Community School Corporation is ensuring that the compassion displayed during those difficult days continues to reach those who need it most.
Because sometimes, the greatest silver lining after a storm is discovering that a community is filled with angels.
