The City of Hobart, the Hobart Police Department, and the Hobart Fire Department joined residents Monday evening for the second annual “Heroes at Homeplate” event at Hobart High School Baseball Field, recognizing the men and women who serve the community both on and off the field.
Held May 11 ahead of the Hobart Brickies’ matchup against the Highland Trojans, the event brought together first responders, families, school officials, and community members for an evening centered on appreciation, public safety, and community connection.
First responders attending in uniform or department apparel received free admission alongside their immediate families as part of the event’s recognition efforts.
The evening also provided opportunities for residents and young attendees to interact directly with first responders through touch-a-truck experiences, conversations with police officers and firefighters, and hands-on engagement activities before first pitch.
Prior to the game, Hobart Police Chief Garret Ciszewski and Hobart Fire Chief Enrique Lopez participated in ceremonial first pitches, officially opening what organizers expect will continue as a growing annual tradition.
“This game is a morale booster for our team,” Ciszewski said. “It gives our officers and firefighters an opportunity to connect with the community in a positive environment and reminds them that their work is appreciated.”
Lopez emphasized the importance of community support and the relationships built outside of emergency situations.
“Without the support of the community, none of this works,” Lopez said. “Events like this strengthen those relationships and remind everyone that we are all working toward the same goal.”
The event also highlighted the coordination between the City of Hobart, Hobart Schools, police, fire, and athletic staff in supporting student and spectator safety during athletic events.
“It’s an incredible working relationship,” said Mark Leto, Hobart High School athletic trainer and announcer. Leto noted that his communication system connects directly to dispatch, allowing for immediate coordination during emergencies. He also pointed to the city’s donation of a retired ambulance to Hobart Schools for use at sporting events and said police and fire officials worked alongside the school corporation to develop emergency action plans for athletics and large gatherings.
Organizers said the event serves as both a recognition of first responders and a reflection of the partnerships supporting public safety throughout the Hobart community.
“Heroes at Homeplate” is expected to continue annually as a way to honor those who serve while bringing residents together through Brickie baseball and community connection.
