Earth Shadows exhibition at IU Northwest to feature Midwest Textile and Ceramic Artists

A new installation at the Gallery for Contemporary Art, located in the Savannah Center at Indiana University Northwest, celebrates Midwest Artists who work with natural materials such as clay and recycled fabrics. Earth Shadows is so named because of the three-dimensional nature of the artworks.

Kurt Anderson is a ceramic artist based in Valparaiso, Indiana. He is a retired art teacher who has continued to nurture his creative spirit through a variety of mediums, photography, music and ceramics. Many of the pieces on display in the show were made in the ceramic studio at IU Northwest.

Boisali Biswas is a multidisciplinary fiber artist inspired by her Indian heritage, blending traditional techniques with contemporary fiber art. Her formative years during her Bachelor of Fine Arts were spent at isva-Bharati University, founded by Rabindranath Tagore at Shantiniketan. Her work combines weaving, dyeing and painting, often exploring themes of identity, culture and environmental connections. She completed her Master of Fine Arts at Bowling Green State University. Exhibited nationally and internationally, her art bridges narratives of memory and transformation.

Laurel Izard’s is a multimedia artist based in Michigan City. Her quilts are crafted from mid-century baby blankets reimagined to reflect concerns about endangered species and the rapid loss of habitat. “Many quilts show a cute and fuzzy world of anthropomorphized animals that is separate from the realities faced by animals in the wild,” Izard said. “I am using the contrast between sweet and fierce to ask the viewer to think about our interactions, or interference with the wild world in a new way.”

Earth Shadows is on view through November 19, with a closing reception scheduled from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on November 12.

Both galleries are open Monday through Thursday, 12-5 p.m.
