The City of Crown Point unveiled its new skate park to hundreds of eager skaters on Wednesday, Oct. 15.

While the City broke ground on the project just over a year ago on Oct. 7, 2024, the new park was years in the making, Crown Point Mayor Pete Land said.

“The current skate park has been here a number of years. It has served our City very well. It served everybody who has used it very well, but we knew that after a lot of blood, sweat and tears and trying to maintain it, it was time to let it retire,” Land said. “In 2022, the City team began to map out our vision for the community. We wanted a vision and drive to develop and build some really good, new quality-of-life amenities for our community and our citizens.”

Land said the City focused on amenities that would benefit everyone, while enhancing existing offerings in Crown Point for current and future generations.

In 2023, the City of Crown Point received a $2.81 million grant from the Dean and Barbara White Family Foundation to help fund the new skate park, as well as a revitalized Sauerman Woods Park, which re-opened to the community in August.

“Let me tell you, it was only because we were the recipients of this grant that this skate park and the Sauerman Park were able to become realities,” Land said. “I personally, as a mayor and as a citizen of Crown Point, I can’t thank them enough for their commitment they always have and continue to show our City.”

Madison Hanna, the project and partnership coordinator for the Dean and Barbara White Family Foundation, said the Foundation values its years-long partnership with Mayor Land and the City of Crown Point.

“This is another example of the kind of creativity and dedication to high quality of life that the City of Crown Point is known for. We work with partners to create the most impactful projects that we can. While the financial contribution is important, it is the partners and the people who use these facilities that really bring them to life,” Hanna said.

Offering something for all ages, the park complements existing recreation amenities on the 95-acre Sportsplex campus. The new park is located on the south side of the Sportsplex near the Sparta Dome.

The concrete park was designed by Hunger Skateparks, with Gariup Construction overseeing the park’s construction. Austgen Electric; Austgen Equipment; Crown Point employees; DVG Team, Inc.; Gariup Construction; Hubinger Landscaping Corp. and Garden Center; Midwestern Electric; Musco Lighting; Olson Construction; and RNC Concrete also contributed to the $1.783 million project.

The park features a 14,500-square-foot skateable area, three street-style lanes, coping, a 5,000 square-foot flow bowl, a peanut pool, lighting and a pedestrian entrance from the expanded Veterans Memorial Trail along U.S. 231.

Parks Director Jennie Burgess said thousands of hours went into bringing the skate park to life, noting the park’s features were guided by the local skating community.

“We hope it’s everything you guys wanted,” Burgess said.

The new park is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
