A Northwest Indiana Life in the Spotlight: Kevin Nevers

As a former reporter, Kevin Nevers continues to use his communication skills in his municipal role with the Town of Chesterton. Nevers currently serves as the public affairs liaison.

“I primarily manage the Town of Chesterton’s Facebook page,” Nevers said.

During his newspaper career, Nevers wrote for “The Chesterton Tribune.” As a reporter for the paper, he covered a variety of topics.

“I covered everything from municipal government, community news, business, the steel industry, NIPSCO, and economic development,” he said. “I covered almost everything except for Porter County politics.”

Nevers is able to apply the knowledge of Chesterton that he acquired as a “Chesterton Tribune” reporter in his current role as public affairs liaison and lean on the communication skills he honed at the paper.

“There’s a lot of crossover from my role as a reporter,” Nevers said.

With the management of Chesterton’s Facebook page comes the coordination of many other layers of communication, including municipal meeting notes, community events, and more.

“I go to all municipal meetings and cover them as thoroughly and objectively as I did for the ‘Chesterton Tribune,’” he said.

Nevers is originally from Milwaukee, Wis. Over the course of his life, he moved multiple times but he’s called Chesterton home for nearly the last 30 years.

“I’ve lived in various places over the years,” Nevers said. “I moved to Chesterton back in 1997.”

Across his career, Nevers has always highly incorporated writing in every role he’s had, which is something he thoroughly enjoys. He is grateful to be able to do what he truly loves for his career.

“I’m one of those fortunate people who are decent writers, love writing, and get to do it for a living,” Nevers said.

In his role, Nevers feels obligated to communicate happenings directly impacting the Chesterton community to the town’s citizens.

“I feel like I have a duty to keep Chesterton residents apprised of what’s going on,” he said. “The community’s loss of “The Chesterton Tribune” was a grievous one but I like to think, in some small way, that I’m able to duplicate some of that great old newspaper’s features on Facebook. I love Chesterton. It’s a community with a big heart, my family is blessed to live here, and I’m hugely privileged to serve it in this small capacity.

Nevers especially values his colleagues. “I think there’s a real camaraderie among the municipal employees,” he said. “They truly care about this town and are proud to be public servants. They’re all of them true professionals.”

In his free time, Nevers enjoys reading and collecting rocks and coins. Additionally, Nevers and his wife have been married for nearly three decades, and he’s very proud of his family.

“I’ve been married for almost 27 years,” he said. “My girls just graduated from Purdue University.”

Nevers loves giving back to his community through his work. He leans on his background as a journalist covering Chesterton’s news to contribute to what he does today. His role as a local husband and father is also making an impact by shaping a future generation of Chesterton natives.
