The City of Mishawaka Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for a vibrant summer season. Residents can expect a packed calendar of concerts, athletic programs and community-wide festivals. With a focus on local connections and inclusive recreation, the City of Mishawaka is blending returning traditions with new programming to keep families active all summer long.
“Our goal is always to find unique ways to engage all of our audience in different categories and interests,” said Phil Blasko, park superintendent for the City of Mishawaka. “We throw a lot of new ideas and ways of thinking out there and try to see what sticks.”
The summer concert series begins June 1 and offers performances at numerous venues across the city. Mondays are at Battell Park and Wednesdays at the Ball Band Biergarten feature a rotating lineup of bands. Thursday night shows start at Central Park and move to the new stage at Kamm Island accommodate larger crowds. Signature events will also return this year, including the fifth annual RetroFest at Ironworks Plaza and the popular Taylor Swift cover act “Taylorville.”
“A lot of the younger girls and teen girls come out to enjoy ‘Taylorville’ with their families,” Blasko said. “There are not too many things we have specifically for younger girls and teenagers, so we love that event because it brings everyone together to enjoy the space.”
The department prioritizes participant enjoyment over competitive scores in sports like track and field, football, and soccer, and it continues to expand recreational opportunities for residents of all ages. Rose Park now features four new pickleball courts, and the department also partnered with local clubs to introduce bocce ball and boling at the facility. These additions complement existing courts at Central Park and Twin Branch Park.
“Our number one rule in all the sports programming that we offer is the kids come smiling and they leave smiling,” Blasko said. “If we’re not having fun, we’re missing the point.”
The Mishawaka Market remains a Sunday staple from May 31 through September 27. The market hosts 72 local vendors, artists and farmers alongside food trucks and live music. Food Truck Fridays take place at the Ball Band Biergarten on alternating Fridays in June and July and offer residents additional dining options.
“Our Mishawaka market has become a huge staple for us on Sundays, and we are very proud of that market,” Blasko said. “For our Food Truck Fridays, we just want to give people a different option for dinner and be able to enjoy our park space. We also want to create some fellowship with friends and have a good night together in our park.”
The city also plans several unique, family-oriented festivals, including Foam Fest on June 20, which features water inflatables and foam machines at Ironworks Plaza. The city will host its annual Independence Day celebration at Central Park on June 27 with a feature of live music, food trucks and fireworks at dusk. Christmas in July will take place on July 11. Finally, Ninja Mayhem comes to Ironworks Avenue on August 15 to bring a mobile Ninja Warrior course to the city.
“What I am most excited about for the summer is the Normain Park renovations with the Miracle Field and being able to offer a whole new experience for those with any type of cognitive, sensory or physical disabilities,” Blasko said. “I am really excited about seeing the new relationships that are going to form and new engagement with an audience that we have not been engaged with before.”
Residents and visitors can stay in the loop on the summer fun by monitoring the Mishawaka Parks Facebook page, which serves as the primary channel for real-time updates, including weather-related scheduling changes and safety announcements.
