Merrillville HS kicked off the Battle of Broadway with past Pirate cheer Alumni to perform with the current Pirate cheer squad. It is an alumni tribute to help perform the fight song and to honor former cheerleading coach, Lori Govert.
“It means a lot. The game is big every year. I know all these guys who I’ve grown up with and this game means a lot to them. It’s important to the town. We can’t wait to play!” (Pat Winters- Merrillville HS Assistant football coach)
“This game in general is always a real fun one, just because of our relationship with Brad and some of his coaches. It’s really nice to have two really strong programs so close to one another. Our whole philosophy of iron sharpening iron, that’s pretty much what the Battle of Broadways is all about. It opens programs of aspirations playing deep into November and testing what we put together as a group during the summer. It’s really fun to get out here with a bunch of guys that we know and really respect and see what they’re bringing to the table.” -Duke LaMere (Andrean HS Assistant football coach)
Three prestigious Pirate coaches were also inducted into the Merrillville HS hall of fame for their service to the school and to the students. David Maldonado, Tammy Deal , and Brian Past were inducted into the hall of fame with a special plaque given to them by Athletic Director Amy Beckham.
“These three inductees really deserve it. I’ve worked with all of them all of my years an as assistant AD, moving into the position of AD and I feel that they’re more deserving than anyone. We have 21 inductees right now in our coaches Hall of fame, and tonight, it’ll be 24. It’s a high honor, probably the highest honor for our coaches. I’m really proud of these three because they’re just great people and do a lot for our children over the years…Combined, they have 85 years of coaching experience here at Merrillville.” -Amy Beckham (Merrillville HS Athletic Director)
