Governance
The elected three member Board of Commissioners serves as the legislative and executive branch of county government. Generally, their roles and responsibilities apply only to the unincorporated areas of the county outside the municipal boundaries of our cities & towns. The elected seven member County Council serves as the fiscal branch of county government and has the ultimate decision making power regarding fiscal affairs.
Infrastructure
County government is responsible for maintaining 132 bridges throughout Porter County as well as 815 miles of roads and storm water management in unincorporated areas outside the municipal boundaries of our cities and towns.
Quality Of Life
County government provides a wide range of programs and services to maintain and improve quality of life including the Memorial Opera House, Expo Center, Museum, Dunes Tourism, Parks & Recreation, Animal Shelter, Veterans Services, Public Libraries, Airport, Soil Conservation, Recycling& Waste Reduction and Health Department
