YMCA of Greater Michiana Marks Next Phase of Downtown South Bend Childcare Center Project

YMCA of Greater Michiana Marks Next Phase of Downtown South Bend Childcare Center Project

YMCA of Greater Michiana welcomed City of South Bend officials, community leaders, and members of the media Wednesday for a hard hat tour of the planned Downtown South Bend YMCA childcare center at 111 W. Jefferson Blvd.

The project will transform the first floor of the existing Downtown South Bend YMCA facility into the organization’s first dedicated childcare center in South Bend. Expected to open in early 2027, the center will serve children from infancy through age three and help address the growing shortage of childcare availability in the region.

“What a truly exciting day as we celebrate this project milestone with a special ceremony,” said Mayor James Mueller. “We’re grateful for the Y’s partnership and for the work being done to expand childcare access in our community.”

Wednesday’s event offered attendees a first look inside the space ahead of renovation and ceremonially marked the beginning of work with a symbolic sledgehammer wall-breaking photo opportunity.

To date, the YMCA of Greater Michiana has raised just over half of its approximately $1.6 million project goal and will continue fundraising as renovations move forward. Current funding partners for the Downtown South Bend Childcare Capital Project include the City of South Bend, Community Foundation of St. Joseph County, United Way of St. Joseph County, and the Northern Indiana Regional Development Authority. Ancon Construction, the project’s construction partner, was also recognized during the event.

“This is an exciting moment not just for the YMCA, but for our community,” said Mark Weber, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Michiana. “Access to affordable, quality childcare continues to be a challenge for many working families, and we’re proud to help meet that need by creating a space that will support children, parents, and the future of downtown South Bend.”
