Urban League of Northwest Indiana Announces Dr. Willie Underwood III as Keynote Speaker for 2026 Annual Leadership Awards Luncheon

The Urban League of Northwest Indiana and its Board of Directors are proud to announce that Dr. Willie Underwood III, President of the American Medical Association, will serve as the keynote speaker for its Annual Leadership Awards Luncheon on Thursday, November 19, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon will be held at Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, where business, civic, education, and nonprofit leaders will gather to celebrate individuals and organizations demonstrating exceptional leadership across the region.

Raised in Gary, Indiana, Dr. Underwood brings more than two decades of clinical experience, including over a decade specializing in robotic urologic surgery, along with a nationally recognized record of advocacy for patient access, physician leadership, and health equity. As noted in his biography, he has “served medicine in his research, in the operating room, in his community, and at the highest levels of organized medicine,” including his service as Chair of the AMA Board of Trustees.

Dr. Underwood expressed his enthusiasm about returning home to address leaders from across Northwest Indiana.

“Coming back to Gary is always deeply meaningful for me,” said Underwood. “This community shaped my foundation, my values, and my commitment to service. I am honored to join the Urban League in celebrating leadership that strengthens our region and uplifts the people who call Northwest Indiana home.”

Urban League President and CEO Dr. Vanessa Allen McCloud emphasized the significance of Dr. Underwood’s participation.
