SCEC Celebrates Harrison Elementary as a Certified Schoolyard Wildlife Habitat

The School City of East Chicago (SCEC) is proud to announce that  Harrison Elementary has officially been recognized as a Certified  Schoolyard Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. This  certification highlights Harrison’s commitment to environmental  education, sustainability, and creating meaningful hands-on learning  opportunities for students.

Through strong community partnerships, Harrison has been able to  bring this vision to life. With the support of the NWI Food Council,  students planted and harvested their own vegetable garden, gaining  firsthand experience with agriculture and the farm-to-table process.  In addition, Earth Charter Indiana played a key role in helping install  a vibrant pollinator garden while teaching students about the  importance of native plants and pollination to our ecosystem.

This certification not only enhances the school’s outdoor spaces but  also strengthens SCEC’s mission to prepare students with the  knowledge, skills, and values they need to thrive as lifelong learners  and responsible citizens.
