Porter County Fair celebrates community spirit during ‘10 best days of summer’

The Porter County Fair returns to the Porter County Expo Center from July 23 to August 1, transforming the grounds into a bustling celebration of community spirit, agricultural tradition, and summer entertainment that draws thousands of visitors each July.

The annual event, known locally as the “10 best days of summer,” represents months of careful preparation and coordination between multiple groups. Lori Daly, director of the Porter County Expo Center and Fairgrounds, oversees the extensive groundwork that makes the fair possible.

“The Expo staff puts tremendous work into making everything safe and presentable,” Daly said.

The preparation process includes annual safety inspections of fire alarms, sprinklers, and fire extinguishers, along with ground maintenance such as fresh mulching, mowing, and ongoing weed control. All restroom facilities undergo thorough cleaning and functionality checks to handle the influx of visitors.

The Porter County Fair is only possible through a community effort.

While Daly’s team maintains the Expo Center year-round, the Porter County Agricultural Society and the volunteer-led Fair Board assume responsibility for planning and operations each July.

“We are on the grounds to support them however we can,” Daly said. “It amazes me every day the level of hard work they put into the whole process.”

The fair maintains its strong connection to agricultural roots, particularly through its support of 4-H youth programs. These young participants showcase months of dedication through livestock exhibits, competitions, and educational demonstrations.

“I love seeing the 4-H’ers putting in hard work and learning so much from the programs,” Daly said. “To the whole community, the fair brings a sense of togetherness.”

First-time visitors should consider the fair’s scope when planning their experience. With numerous attractions spanning multiple venues, Daly recommends spreading visits across several days to fully appreciate the offerings.

“There is so much to do. A first-time attendee might want to spread it out over a few days to truly enjoy all that the fair has to offer,” she said.

This year’s attractions include from local favorites like Dick Diamond & the Dusters, several animal shows and 4-H events, grandstand shows sure to have you on the edge of your seat, and plenty of carnival rides and games to enjoy with the whole family.
