Northwest Health welcomes new class of physician residents to its family and internal medicine residencies

Northwest Health – Porter celebrated a new class of residents at its annual white coat ceremony held on June 24 in the community room of Northwest Health – Porter. Residents were presented with their first white coat, a mark of the hard work and perseverance they’ve demonstrated on their journey into the medical field.

“It is such an honor to be granted the title of a teaching facility. It’s exciting to be able to bestow knowledge upon our budding physicians. They come from such different backgrounds, so it’s great to see other people’s perspectives as they come in from different walks of life,” said Dr, Kelly Marsalek, family medicine physician.

Northwest Health’s residency program focuses on passionately and professionally mentoring the next generation of physicians to ensure patients receive the best care possible. Northwest Health offers both family medicine and internal medicine residencies, one of the few providers in Northwest Indiana able to do so.

Over the course of the program, these new physicians will be guided by Northwest Health’s excellent and experienced caregivers.

Northwest Health’s residency programs ensure residents receive a well-rounded education while giving them the opportunity to participate in elective experiences, letting residents have a hand in shaping their own education. Additionally, Northwest Health’s location and clinic sites give students the opportunity to work in urban, suburban, and rural communities during their time in the program.

“We are the first program within a 60-mile radius for family medicine, bringing health care to an area that needs it the most,” said Marsalek. “Doctors here get to learn to be jacks of all trades, and we have a lot of support from our sponsoring institutions, both Northwest Health and Health Link. The location is also great; Valpo is a great place to live and work.”

The programs also offer paid incentives for further professional development as well as a host of benefits like health insurance and PTO. Residents are able to focus fully on their education with the support of their peers and mentors.

“I’m originally from Dyer, and I was looking for somewhere where I felt welcome at the program while still being close to home,” said Resident Shelly Shibu. “Northwest Health was the perfect mix of the two.”

Northwest Health’s residency programs are Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited, recognizing the high-quality graduate medical education offered by the programs.
