National New York Central Railroad Museum offers a journey through Elkhart’s rich railroad legacy

The story of American railroading runs straight through Elkhart, making the National New York Central Railroad Museum (NNYCRRM) more than just a collection of historic artifacts — it is a destination where visitors can experience the legacy of one of the most influential railroads in the nation.

Owned and operated by the City of Elkhart, this museum has served as a hub for preserving railroad history since it was founded in 1987. Dedicated to the heritage of the New York Central Railroad System, the museum showcases the impact of a company that once ranked as the nation’s second-largest railroad, operating more than 11,000 route miles across 11 states and two Canadian provinces.

As the story goes, the first train made its way through Elkhart, back when it was a village. The wood-burning engine, hauling a train of flat cars and a caboose, chugged along a wooden bridge across the Elkhart River before making it to Main St. Just south of the village would be a forest that eventually turned into a freight depot, located where the museum stands today.

Today, the city’s Robert R. Young Yard — now operated as Norfolk Southern’s Elkhart Yard — remains the second-largest freight classification yard east of the Mississippi River, continuing Elkhart’s tradition as a vital connection between the Atlantic Seaboard, the Midwest, and points beyond.

Since then, Elkhart has been an essential link in the chain that connects the east and west. It allowed Elkhart’s preexisting industries to grow, helping the local businesses, immigrants, and people in the community thrive.

The rich history of this rail comes to life through exhibits and preserved railroad equipment that illustrate how the New York Central helped shape commerce, transportation and plenty of communities. The museum’s mission of preserving and interpreting history while helping visitors understand America’s railroading past, helps to inspire future generations to appreciate the lasting importance of rail transportation.

One way that people are able to celebrate the history is through a community engagement initiative known as ElkhartRail175 — a series of events that are coordinated to recognize the 175th anniversary of rail in Elkhart. All year long, with brand-new programming, ElkhartRail175 has events that are fun, interactive ways to educate the community. The Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and the Friends of the National New York Central Railroad Museum are the presenting sponsors of ElkhartRail175.

Earlier in the year, visitors have had the opportunity to learn about famous passenger trains, refrigerator cars, rail exhibit openings, and a general background of the 175 years in Elkhart. Some of the biggest upcoming events that serve as a part of the ElkhartRail175 schedule include:

• August 15, 2 p.m. – 175 Series: Elkhart’s Rail Accidents – The Past, Present, & Future. Presentation by Andrew Medford. Location: NNYCRRM Event Space.
• August 29, 9:50 a.m. – Waterways to Railways Walking Tour. Presented by the NNYCRRM in collaboration with Ruthmere. Free admission, registration required. Location: 819 N Main St, Elkhart, IN 46514. Register Here.
• September 12, 2 p.m. – 175 Series: Intercity Passenger Rail in the Postwar Era. Presentation by Steve Wylder. Location: NNYCRRM Event Space.
• October 3, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. – 175th Anniversary of Rail in Elkhart. Location: NNYCRRM.

Additionally, the next monthly Kid’s Storytime event will be taking place on August 8, giving kids an opportunity to learn about train stories and participate in crafts or coloring activities.
