Over the course of its 65-year history, Korellis Roofing, Inc. has grown from a local business based out of Hammond into a nationally recognized contracting company. While it originally offered residential roofing services throughout the Region, Korellis now exclusively operates as a specialized commercial and industrial roofing contractor that also offers masonry, carpentry, and sheet metal services. Although the area of specialization has shifted for Korellis, the reputation for honest business and quality work that Founder George Korellis built up for his company persists to this very day.
“George Korellis would go out to speak with the homeowner and personally find out what they needed,” Matt Evans, president of Korellis, said. “He’d shake their hand, tell them how much the job would cost, and assure them that Korellis had them covered. George Korellis’ personal approach earned an incredible reputation for integrity and trust that still defines Korellis today. The company proved time and again that it could provide homeowners with the high-quality roof system they were looking for.”
In 1984, Pete Korellis, then-CEO of Korellis and son of George Korellis, led the company into the world of commercial and industrial roofing with an exciting project: replacing the roof of the Ford Motor Company’s Assembly Plant in Chicago. Since then, Korellis has secured many notable commercial and industrial roofing projects both in Indiana and further afield in states like Illinois, South Carolina, Texas, Michigan, and even Hawaii. Korellis was even entrusted with roofing projects for both the now-retired Palisades Nuclear Plant in Covert, Michigan as well as the United States government’s Pantex Nuclear Power Plant in Carson County, Texas.
As a Region-born business, Korellis has been extremely active in Northwest Indiana over the years as well. It has provided roofing solutions for Hammond High School, the BP Whiting Refinery, Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana in Gary, the South Shore Line’s Dune Park Station in Porter, and the Geminus Early Learning Center in Valparaiso.
Each of Korellis’ roofing projects goes beyond merely providing buildings throughout the community with secure and strong roofs. Although the direct result of these jobs is the protection of each structure’s interior, they are more than mere construction projects. They are investments in the Region’s businesses and organizations, as well-crafted roofing enables these entities to operate effectively. By helping these organizations thrive, Korellis’ work generates resources for the community, helps maintain property values, supports growth, and strengthens the future of the Region.
“Our industrial and commercial customers want peace of mind, just as Korellis’ home-owning customers did,” Evans said. “They want to work with a contractor they enjoy doing business with one who will deliver a product that lasts so they can keep their operations running smoothly. We maintain the professionalism, quality, and care that have defined Korellis for decades. Our customers are willing to pay a bit more for our services because they know our values and trust in the excellence of our workmanship. Korellis takes on projects that other companies might shy away from, and we continue to push the boundaries of traditional roofing.”
The Korellis team is constantly seeking out other ways to support the Region and engage with the local community. This includes sending volunteers to support The Salvation Army, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Humana Indiana Shelter, Phil’s Friends, and the Excel Youth Programs’ “Nail It Trades Summer Bash” career fair. Korellis employees also volunteered at Tradewinds Services’ Carnival Day as they participated in United Way’s Day of Caring earlier this month. This year, in response to recent funding adjustments, Franciscan Health had to limit its Mobile Markets to holidays only. Korellis volunteered to sponsor a Mobile Market event on August 20 from 3-5 p.m. in Hammond.
As its employees use their time and talents to support the community, Korellis as a whole continues to strive to be the best that it can be.
“Our goal is to determine what each customer needs and provide an effective solution that accommodates their budget,” Evans said. “It’s not a transaction for us. We’re about people and about the community. The time and resources we have invested locally speak to that commitment. The Korellis team champions a culture of integrity, precision, excellence, and a readiness to serve. We don’t just talk about this culture,. We live it. That’s what sets our company apart. You can see our values in the way our employees work with one another, with our customers, and with the community as a whole.”
