One unexpected visitor. One generous ‘yes.’ More than 8,800 dogs saved

Mark Forszt had no idea that saying “yes” to one unexpected visitor would help change the lives of thousands of homeless dogs across Northwest Indiana.

In early 2011, Jeanne Sommer walked into Forszt’s office at Harley-Davidson of Valparaiso without an appointment. She had heard that he was a dog lover and asked a simple question: Would he consider helping a brand-new nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing homeless dogs and finding them loving families?

Before the conversation ended, Forszt and his brother, Mike Forszt of MJF Development, wrote Sommer a check for $25,000.

That act of generosity became the foundation for a partnership that continues to make a difference today.Lakeshore PAWS officially incorporated in April 2011. During the past 15 years, the organization has rescued, cared for and found loving homes for more than 8,800 dogs.

Just a few months after that first meeting, Lakeshore PAWS hosted its inaugural Pup Crawl in August 2011. Forszt became one of the event’s first sponsors and has continued supporting the organization’s largest annual fundraiser every year since.

Recently, Sommer and two four-legged friends stopped by to thank Forszt for his years of unwavering support. The visit included a stop at the newly opened Tru by Hilton Valparaiso, a hotel developed by MJF Development. Fittingly, the hotel welcomes canine guests, reflecting the Forszt family’s longtime love for dogs.

The celebration also included a visit to Harley-Davidson of Valparaiso, another longtime supporter of Lakeshore PAWS. The dealership has hosted numerous puppy adoption events and fundraisers over the years, helping connect rescue dogs with forever families while rallying the community around the organization’s mission. For Sommer, that unexpected visit in 2011 wasn’t just the beginning of a nonprofit. It launched a friendship and partnership that has given more than 8,800 dogs a second chance and countless families the opportunity to welcome a new best friend into their homes.

“Our four-legged and two-legged friends are both very excited about the new hotel,” Sommer said.

Sometimes, the biggest impact begins with the courage to knock on a door and the kindness to answer it.
