Know the Signs and Risks to Strike Out Stroke and Take Control of Your Health

Stroke doesn’t just happen to “other people” – this serious medical condition can happen to anyone. In fact, an estimated 1 in 4 adults over the age of 25 will experience a stroke in their lifetimes. While the risk for a stroke increases as a person ages, more than half of strokes occur in those younger than 70, research shows.

Knowing the risk factors and recognizing the warning signs is critical, because when it comes to stroke, every minute counts. The community is invited to join Northwest Health Stroke Coordinator Amanda Elkins, BSN, RN, for an important one-hour seminar that focuses on stroke awareness and prevention so that attendees can recognize the signs early and respond immediately to improve outcomes.

The free event, called “Strike Out Stroke: Know the Signs, Know the Risks,” will take place from 11 a.m. to noon, May 8, in the Activity Center for Older Adults, 901 Lincolnway (first floor) in La Porte. During this presentation, Elkins will go over the different types of strokes, their causes, warning signs and key risk factors. She will also discuss practical tips for reducing a person’s risk and staying healthy, and there will be time for questions and answers following the presentation.

“Stroke is often preventable when people understand their risk factors and take steps to address them early,” Elkins said. “My goal is to help people feel empowered to take control of their health and act quickly if they ever notice warning signs.”

The event is part of the Northwest Health HealthyU series, a wellness program that provides free seminars on various health and wellness topics for the community. Registration is encouraged. To register, visit NWHinfo.com/StrikeOutStroke. For more information, call 219-262-6446.
