How Hartman Global is helping secure products and patents in the security and self-defense industry

Hartman Global International Property Law has helped SABRE license and patent multiple products. Technically hosted under the name Security Equipment, Inc., SABRE manufactures and sells non-lethal self-defense products and non-lethal weapon devices.

“The company name is Security Equipment, Inc., and their products are sold under the name SABRE,” said Hartman Global Partner Gary Hartman. “However, they are generally known as SABRE within the industry and in the market.”

Hartman works closely with SABRE and has guided them through the product and patent  intellectual property (IP) process for several years. In fact, Hartman has worked with them on every new product they currently carry.

“As their IP attorneys, we are responsible for assisting them with protecting their trademarks and inventions,” said Hartman. “We have been their IP attorneys for just over four years, during which time SABRE has been very prolific in bringing unique and novel products to the market, which resulted in the filing of roughly thirty US patent applications.”

SABRE’s areas of security include campus safety, commuter safety, home security, travel safety, runner safety, and hiking essentials. Established in 1975, the 51-year-old company is considered an industry leader in non-lethal self-defense and non-lethal weapon products.

“SABRE is one of, if not always, the number one manufacturer of non-lethal personal defense mechanisms, pepper spray for example,” Domenica Hartman, also a partner at Hartman Global, said. “Gary works closest with this client, but we’ve all witnessed them grow their product line and it’s been a thrill to help them secure many, many patents and product licenses.”

Other SABRE products include defense spray – which incorporates pepper spray, tear gas, and UV marking dye – stun guns, pepper gel – which acts like pepper spray minus the aerosol factor which has a tendency to leave a lingering odor – bear spray, mountain lion spray, fake cameras, standalone home alarms, full security systems, self-defense programs, and more.

Based in Arkansas, SABRE gives consumers the “freedom to live boldly” and the “confidence to move forward” as their website states.

“SABRE is one of our many clients who are located out-of-state,” Domenica Hartman said. “Probably 90% of our clients are outside this area or overseas.”

Due to its prominence and expertise, SABRE has been featured across many media outlets, including “The Wall Street Journal” and “60 Minutes.” Their excellence stems from several key factors.

“For one, they’re located here in the United States; I say that because a lot of the players in the self-defense and personal security area are overseas and their products are junk,” said Domenica Hartman. “They have a culture that looks to always improve. You’ll find that companies that make products like SABRE must be very fast-acting since you have to be able to read the market and read the consumer segment.”

As SABRE continues to grow its product line, Hartman Global will be there to help secure patents and product licenses. By working closely together, they are growing the non-lethal self-defense and non-lethal weapon space. To learn more about SABRE and their product line visit www.sabrered.com
