On May 16, Tech Credit Union of Crown Point partnered with Secure Shred, a social enterprise of Opportunity Enterprises, to provide a free community paper shredding event at the credit union’s office. Tech CU employees volunteered their time under the Midwest summer sun, helping residents safely dispose of sensitive documents and reduce the risk of identity theft and fraud. Cars carrying bags and boxes of old paperwork arrived steadily throughout the afternoon as community members took advantage of the free service.
Lionel Sanchez, assistant vice president and director of marketing at Tech CU, said the event reflects a growing need for secure document disposal in today’s environment.
“There’s an increasing need for people to safely dispose of sensitive documents because fraud and identity theft continue to be a concern,” Sanchez said. “Events like this provide the community with a secure, convenient way to protect their personal information while also supporting organizations that make a positive impact locally.”
Outside of the Shred Event, Tech CU continues to support members through modern banking services, financial education, and community outreach initiatives designed to improve financial wellness.
“We’re a member-focused organization that believes in putting people and community first,” Sanchez said. “Our goal is to help members achieve financial wellness by providing trusted financial guidance, educational resources, and personalized support that helps them build stronger financial futures.”
Tech CU also takes pride in remaining actively involved throughout Northwest Indiana and the surrounding communities. From partnering with local schools and participating in chamber and community events to supporting financial literacy initiatives and nonprofit organizations, Tech CU employees regularly volunteer their time and expertise to give back to the communities they serve.
The Community Shred event relied on Tech CU employees volunteering extra hours on a warm Saturday afternoon to help the event run smoothly. Employees from across multiple departments worked side by side with smiles on their faces as they helped Northwest Indiana residents unload bags and boxes of documents into secure shredding bins.
“We have employees from all departments who volunteer their time to support events like this because giving back to the community is part of who we are,” Sanchez said. “There’s a real sense of pride in serving our members and neighbors beyond the walls of the credit union.”
Tech CU’s Community Shred Event is one example of the organization’s ongoing commitment to supporting and strengthening the communities it serves through meaningful outreach and service.
“At Tech CU, we’re committed to making a positive impact in the communities we serve,” Sanchez said. “Whether it’s through financial education, volunteerism, or community partnerships, we strive to support the financial well-being of our members and help build stronger communities for everyone.”
