Summer oil changes can be more expensive due to rising motor oil and supply costs. On Friday, July 31, the 21st Lube-a-Thon for Hospice event offered attendees an oil change and a car wash for just a $50 donation to Center for Hospice Care (CHC). The event was put on by Tom’s Car Care Center on Sugar Maple Business Ct. in South Bend. Center for Hospice Care also co-hosted and was located at the Tom’s Car Care Center site on Sugar Maple Business Ct. in South Bend.
The mission of Center for Hospice Care is to improve the quality of living for those needing end-of-life care. CHC is the area’s most experienced hospice and palliative care provider, having served more than 50,000 since opening its doors 46 years ago. The oil change fundraiser supports the nonprofit hospice provider with funding for different programs and services, particularly providing skilled, compassionate care for those who are eligible for services but are unable to pay for them.
“We donate 100% of the money raised,” said Dennis Zmyslo, owner of Tom’s Car Care Center. “They use the money to provide their services to the community.”
With each oil change, attendees were presented with a goodie bag and a t-shirt as well as a free coffee and a muffin or cookie. The fundraiser ran from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Along with Tom’s Car Care Center, Center for Hospice Care partnered with local businesses such as the Water Works Car Wash and the Coffee Spot Cafe to put on this year’s Lube-a-Thon event.
“Our oil company, RelaDyne, also provides us with the oil for this event, so that’s a big help,” Zmyslo said. “The radio stations are also a huge help in promoting the event.”
Attendees were also invited to participate in the South Bend Medical Foundation’s Blood Drive, which took place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“We do a lot with the South Bend Medical Foundation; it’s great that they’re out here,” Zymslo said.
With so many opportunities to support local organizations, the Lube-a-Thon serves as a prime example of how Center for Hospice Care can provide comfort care and family services – through both its core services and community events. First-time attendees of the Lube-a-Thon were invited to ask questions and learn more about the event and what Center for Hospice Care is all about.
“This event really gets the word out about Center for Hospice Care,” Zymslo said. “They’re involved in all the advertising too, so that also tells people about what they do and the services they provide.”
For more than two decades, the Lube-a-Thon has given the community a consistent opportunity to score big on a win-win opportunity. Center for Hospice Care is thrilled about the turnout for this year’s event and looks forward to what’s in store next year.
