Belvedere Senior Housing put their residents in the Halloween spirit with Trunk or Treat

Belvedere Senior Housing put their residents in the Halloween spirit on Friday, October 23, with their annual Trunk or Treat. Residents of the senior living facility dressed up in Halloween costumes and went from trunk to trunk to receive candy from staff and community members who manned their cars for the event, including members of the Winnimac Old Auto Club and the Merrillville Police Department.

The Belvedere Senior Housing Trunk or Treat isn’t just for residents- Merrillville families and community members were all welcome to enjoy the festivities that Belvedere had put on. There were several activities beyond the Trunk or Treat itself. Staff set up a bouncy castle for the children, and a walking taco station for all attendees to have dinner after working up their appetites.

“Our goal is to incorporate the community with our residents that we have here by offering this fun-filled for all ages Trunk or Treat,” said Kristie Palomo, the Director of Marketing and Sales at Belvedere Senior Housing. “We have various partners in the community that have joined us, along with staff members that have decorated their cars as well.”

The Belvedere Senior Housing Trunk or Treat is an event that residents circle on their calendars every year. Of course, it provides them an opportunity to get out of their lodgings and celebrate the most easy going holiday, but the Trunk or Treat does something deeper; it brings their families together. Their children and grandchildren often turn out, all dressed in costumes, with smiles on their faces. Such an atmosphere is difficult to manufacture, and Belvedere Senior Housing has excelled at it.

“It’s for the residents’ families to come,” Palomo said. “It’s for people outside of Belvedere to come. We want to show off what a great community we have, and we definitely believe in the intergenerational relationships that we can build, having fun for all ages. You’ll see residents out here with their families trick or treating, and then some of them have grandkids, nieces, nephews, cousins. They bring them, and then again, the community comes as well. We give everybody a bag so they can participate with all the trunks we have available.”

The Belvedere Senior Housing Trunk or Treat has grown more and more with every passing year. Countless families and residents were bustling down the parking lot throughout the day, getting candy from the different community members and vendors. Whether it is the costumes, the community partners handing out candy, the bouncy castle, or the food, Belvedere residents and employees feel immense joy from this event. The resident’s families, too, were having a wonderful time and their smiles were contagious.
