As a realtor, David Schara knows that many potential homebuyers right now have questions and concerns. He wants to be a voice of calm assurance as he helps guide people through the steps of homeownership.
Growing up in Valparaiso, Schara knew that he didn’t want to go the college route after high school, though he wasn’t entirely sure what he did want to do. He considered a few different options before real estate called out to him.
“Real estate was always deep down an interest in me, but I never really thought I would be a realtor or be that involved in it,” Schara said. “I decided to take a shot and just jumped into it. Turns out, I love it. I grew up watching HGTV, and that probably gave me my earliest interest in it on the investment side of things, but it is different in the real world than on TV.”
Schara earned his realtor license and began working in real estate about four years ago. He appreciates that it was not a business he was talked into by anyone or inherited from a family member, but rather one he let himself be drawn to through true interest. He believes that this has made him more invested in the process, and he puts heart into the work he does as well as a positive mindset.
Schara has also kept up with his personal interests outside of his work, which include soccer. In addition to playing when he can, he coaches at Wheeler High School.
“I never saw myself as a coach or wanting to coach,” Schara said. “I love soccer. I grew up playing soccer, but I never saw myself jumping into that coaching role. About a year or two after I graduated, the coach that was there reached out to me asking if I wanted to coach the goalie. I had played goalie, and I contemplated it for a while. Then I said, ‘You know what? Let’s give it a try.’ It turns out that I love doing it, and I’m decent at it.”
Schara is enthusiastic about his active lifestyle, which includes just about any outdoor activity possible and any sport he can give a go. He takes this go-getter mindset into his profession as well as his coaching, and he believes it shows in every aspect of what he does.
“I love coaching. It is one of my pride and joys of my life. It’s just so fun hanging out with the boys, helping them, and coaching them. Obviously I’m proud of coaching them in soccer, but I’m also teaching them to be young men going out of high school and into the world,” said Schara.
As the next generation enters the adult world and begins to look for their future home, Schara has advice for them and for anyone else looking to buy in this market.
“My advice is this; the best time to buy has always been now — and that’s not a sales pitch, it’s math,” Schara said. “When rates rise, prices correct, but you pay more in interest. When rates fall, prices climb and you’re competing with everyone who is sitting on the sidelines. The market always finds a way to balance itself. Your best move is to get in, build equity, and let time do the work.”
