Natasha Boyd, freelance hair stylist and founder of Crown Point’s Beauty House on Main, has spent the last 15 years honing her skills and chasing her ambitions in the beauty industry.

Early in life, Boyd discovered her affinity for cosmetics. Through her time in dance programs, she became familiar with the artistic process of many areas, including costuming, hairstyling, and makeup design. From her position on the fringes of this work, her drive to become a stylist bloomed.

“I was able to discover a creative outlet that allowed me to feel good about myself, and I wanted to be able to do that for others,” Boyd said.

Boyd began her journey with cosmetology school. Around the same time, she started undertaking work in different salons, though she never quite settled into a space where she felt entirely comfortable. After the birth of her second child, Boyd took a hiatus from traditional salon work and shifted to more specific services, gradually moving towards special event styling such as bridal looks for weddings. Through this work, Boyd reconnected with her original desire to help others feel confident and cared for.

“I realized how much I missed working and being able to make people feel better about themselves,” Boyd said.

In 2019, she made the decision to start offering her services to others on a small scale, renting a booth a couple days a week as a freelancer. Boyd used this as a way to gauge community interest in her work as well as to get back into the rhythm of client work.

It did not take long for her to book enough clients to realize that she had the ability to create something bigger than a booth rental. Boyd started to approach fellow freelance stylists to gather advice on how to begin her own business. This marked a period of vulnerability and immense gratitude from Boyd, who found herself welcomed and uplifted by a community she once felt slightly askew in.

“I have been able to connect with and meet the most supportive group of people who are also part of the beauty and bridal industry,” Boyd said. “We have become our own little helpful community, and I’m truly grateful for everyone I’ve met along the way.”

In August 2020, Boyd founded Beauty House on Main. The business focuses on color and cutting services, while Boyd specializes in blonding and bridal styles.

Boyd’s establishment of Beauty House on Main allowed her to take the time she needed for her children while also pursuing her career goals. For Boyd, being active in the lives of her children has always taken priority, and her role as both boss and employee lends to a healthier work-life balance.

Not only has Boyd focused on cultivating a healthy community at home, but she has also cultivated a community through her business, lifting up both clients and fellow stylists.

“It definitely makes jobs more fun when you work with people you know and trust and also when you’re able to recommend the perfect person to clients looking for a specific service or vendor,” Boyd said.

Following the birth of her third child, Boyd has spent much of spring on maternity leave. She finds herself especially grateful for the extra time with her family and the chance to rest. As the year progresses, she looks forward to getting back behind the chair, where she can continue to offer her services to clients. She considers her impact on clients to be a positive reminder of why she founded Beauty House on Main in the first place.

“Seeing how happy and beautiful I’m able to make my bridal clients feel on their special day is my absolute favorite part of my job,” Boyd said. “It’s an honor knowing these women trust me to be a part of something that they will remember forever, and I always try to make it a great experience for them.”
