A Michiana Life in the Spotlight: Brad Alasauskas

Whether he was playing baseball, the bass guitar, or doing photography, Brad Alasauskas has had a lifelong passion for unleashing his creative side ever since he was a kid. These activities are some of the many ways he was able to express himself growing up and discover a career that calls for having an innovative mindset.

Even though he has lived his entire life in Indiana, Alasauskas has traveled from place to place throughout his career. Born in Portage, he started out as a student at George L. Myers Elementary School.

When his parents moved to Valparaiso during sixth grade, Alasauskas became a student at Union Township. He stood out in a variety of ways while adjusting to a new school, such as being the lone bass guitarist in his band class and playing baseball all throughout high school. He graduated from Wheeler High School in 2019 and continued his education at Ball State University.

While he had a lot of passions coming out of high school, Alasauskas wasn’t sure what he wanted to do when he first started college. Eventually, he set his mind to pursue something that gave him the most enjoyment: social media.

“I was very plugged into it,” Alasauskas said. “I would make multiple social media accounts about random stuff growing up, and that made me want to go to Ball State University for the telecommunications degree, which is now called the media degree. I was split between going to Ball State for telecommunications or anthropology because I enjoy learning about different cultures and people in general. I ended up going with telecommunications because it was more fun, and it reminded me of what I would do in my free time in high school.”

During his time at Ball State, Alasauskas took a scriptwriting class, where he met his teacher and future supervisor when he was hired onto a Ball State in-house marketing team called Compass Creative. This was an opportunity for him to learn about advertising and marketing, which unlocked a door for him to learn about a career in social media. By his senior year, he was promoted to a managerial position.

Near the end of his college career, Alasauskas took a position as a Social Media Coordinator at Surf Internet. He was excited to have an opportunity of this magnitude lined up right after he graduated from college.

“I was struggling to get interviews for marketing positions towards the end of college, possibly due to the saturation and the amount of people who go into the field,” Alasauskas said. “When I found Surf Internet, I knew I would be doing a lot of what I did for Compass Creative. I applied, went through the interview process, and it felt amazing to get the job. I was excited to start a career right after college where I knew that I could grow and learn from very experienced people.”

Alasauskas has been able to participate in a lot of community events and interact with people in the Michiana area since he started at Surf Internet. One opportunity has been collaborating with the South Bend Cubs, which allows Alasauskas to support the community around the baseball diamond.

“We’ve done a ton of fun things over the past 2.5 years I’ve been here,” Alasauskas said. “The South Bend Cubs are a huge partner with us. Going to baseball games and handing out bobble heads is always a pretty awesome time. We’ve even had company outings where we’ve watched a game in the high-rise building in left field. Outside of working with the Cubs, one of my favorite events to attend was our Indiana Connectivity Program (ICP) events to help rural residents get broadband internet brought to them through grant funding.”

Making the move to Michiana was a new experience for Alasauskas. It was different from the likes of Portage, Valparaiso, and Muncie. However, he has been able to adapt since he moved to the area in 2023.

“When I was in Muncie, it was fast-paced in my eyes, being somewhat near Indy and also going to college” Alasauskas said. “Moving here has helped me slow down a little bit. It’s like when you change your room around; you have the same stuff, but it’s just a different scene.”

Alasauskas believes the best part of being a Michiana resident is the ability to connect with so many great people in the community, especially in his position as a social media coordinator.

“One of my favorite things about what I do at Surf Internet is that I get to make content, captions, and answer the messages or comments on every post that we have,” Alasauskas said. “The best part for me is being able to help our community get the answers they need to fix the issues they have, and send them to the person they need to talk to. I’m grateful to have the job and help people in this community.”

When it comes to diving into a career in social media, Alasasukas encourages people to put their best foot forward and listen to their educators.

“People should get out of their comfort zone and start talking to others, even through social media,” Alasauskas said. “I had a whole community of friends that I’ve never met in person before that helped me grow in graphic design or video editing. Also, if you’re in college or high school, talk to your professors and teachers. They can lead the way to opportunities that will help you grow and further your career. My scriptwriting teacher was beyond generous with helping me out. I wouldn’t have been able to get a job doing that if I didn’t speak up and get to know people.”

Outside of work, Alasauskas spends a lot of time with his wife and their cats. He also enjoys gaming and reading. He occasionally likes going on drives and has even done some photography work while exploring local communities.
