Hartman Global Spotlight: Nell Mick

Hartman Global Spotlight: Nell Mick

Nell Mick is known amongst her colleagues at Hartman Global IP Law as “legal assistant extraordinaire.”

“Nell is competent and enthusiastic—ready to tackle any and all projects – thus ‘extraordinaire!’” explained Hartman Global Co-Founder Domenica Hartman of the history behind Mick’s nickname.

Mick has not even been in her role as legal assistant at Hartman Global for a full year, yet she is already known for her hard work and dedication to her job.

“My motivation has always been to help others,” she said. “Whether it is in my personal or professional life, I have always loved feeling like I have made someone’s day a little bit easier. I love organization, structure, and detail, and the checks and balances that are already in place here make it that much easier to meet deadlines and complete my work.”

In her role, she works to help others secure trademarks.

“One of my favorite parts of my job is knowing we are helping a client’s vision come to life,” she said. “They have already put blood, sweat, and tears into their inventions, brands, and businesses, and when I get to tell a client that their trademark is federally protected, I feel a little bit like Santa Claus several times a year, and they are that much closer to achieving their dream.”

Meeting new clients is a regular part of her role.

“I also enjoy meeting new clients and seeing their product first-hand,” she said. “I especially love hearing about their relief once the ‘labyrinth’ of intellectual property is explained to them; it is a new ‘language’ and there can be a lot of incorrect information found online.”

Mick’s role also comes with a lot of diverse tasks and growth.

“I love to stay busy, and I’m continuously learning,” Mick said. “Right before Thanksgiving, I had just completed an online Trademark Bootcamp that really helped me get up to speed. I also love the variety, almost every day I’m communicating with different counties, each having its own nuances, laws, and requirements, or viewing a client’s Facebook or webpage.”

Mick is basically a lifelong Hoosier. She spent most of her childhood in Northwest Indiana. Prior to moving to Valparaiso, Mick and her husband lived in Indianapolis for almost five years.

In addition to working in an administrative role within the legal industry, she has also worked in an administrative capacity within human resources, insurance, and hydraulics. All of these prior experiences help her as she works alongside her team at Hartman Global.

“We are also a close-knit group that helps each other through discussions and feedback, and we are all open to all suggestions,” she said.

Mick suggests entrepreneurs work with a licensed intellectual attorney.

“Since intellectual property is an entirely different kind of language, I would suggest that someone interested in pursuing their inventions, copyright, or trademark contact a licensed intellectual property attorney,” she said.

Of course, Hartman Global regularly helps these types of entrepreneurs.

“In regard to trademarks, there is an ongoing saying in the office that in a few years, we’ll be back to reading hieroglyphics,” she said.

Mick is an asset to the Hartman Global team and a true legal assistant extraordinaire.
