History on Highway 421: Westville Turns Milestones Into Memories

The course at West Central High School wasn’t interested in handing out anything for free Saturday.

Under sunny skies, runners negotiated the rough, bumpy terrain of the 421 Run Invite, where rhythm could disappear with one awkward step and patience mattered nearly as much as speed.

Westville didn’t seem to mind.

The Blackhawks left Francesville with a championship, a runner-up finish, state-qualifying performances, personal bests and a collection of program firsts in one of the strongest across-the-board outings for Westville cross country.

And once again, the middle school girls led the charge.

Blackhawks go back-to-back

Westville’s middle school girls defended their 421 Run championship, scoring 19 points to beat Frontier’s 36 and becoming back-to-back 421 Run champions.

The Blackhawks put five runners inside the top 20, but seventh grader Makayla Doyle supplied the exclamation point.

Doyle won the 3,000-meter race in 12 minutes, 4 seconds, becoming the first Westville middle school girl to win an individual 421 Run title.

She wasn’t alone near the front.

Seventh grader Lily Jamieson finished second in 12:34, while seventh grader Tessa Musgrave ran a personal-best 13:23 to finish fourth. Eighth grader Genevieve Nettrouer gave Westville a fourth scorer inside the top seven, placing seventh in 13:38.

Doyle, Jamieson and Musgrave also reached the qualifying standard for the Indiana Middle School Cross Country State Championships, giving Westville three state-standard performances from the same race.

The Blackhawks’ scoring five went 1-2-3-5-8 in the team scoring, producing the 19-point total. Seventh grader Lily Barbahen finished 16th overall in 15:49, giving Westville its fifth runner among the first 20 finishers.

For a program that entered the meet as defending champion, Saturday wasn’t simply about protecting last year’s accomplishment.

They built another floor on top of it.

Westville boys reach new program height

The middle school boys added their own piece of history.

Westville finished second overall with 31 points, behind Frontier’s 25, marking the highest team finish in Westville middle school boys cross country history at the 421 Run.

Eighth grader Gavin Hutchison led the way with a breakthrough performance.

Hutchison finished fourth overall in 11:58, breaking 12 minutes for 3K with a personal best. The performance also qualified him for the Indiana Middle School Cross Country State Championships for the third consecutive year, making him the first Westville middle school boy to accomplish that feat.

The Blackhawks placed four runners inside the top 20. Seventh grader Zachary Brady was 12th in 14:49, eighth grader Henry Golden finished 14th in 15:16, and seventh grader Owen Ortt was 16th in 15:34.

Westville’s scoring five went 2-5-6-7-11 in the official team scoring.

Frontier got the win.

Westville, however, walked away with another sign that its boys program is climbing.

Bradney breaks new ground for HS boys

The history-making continued when the high school races took over.

Freshman Tobias Bradney finished sixth overall in 18:57, becoming the first freshman in Westville boys cross country history to place in the top 10 at the 421 Run.

In a field of 50 runners, Bradney put himself immediately among the leaders and gave the Blackhawks another glimpse at what their young standout could become.

Junior Jayden Couture added an 18th-place finish in 21:41, putting two Westville boys among the first 20.

Senior Connor Keen was 36th in 23:53, freshman Everett Ewart finished 43rd in 25:23 and freshman Anthony Ahnefeld was 45th in 26:31.

Barbahen cracks top five, Martin reaches top 20

Westville’s high school girls made some history of their own.

Sophomore Abagail Barbahen finished fifth overall in 23:34, becoming the first Westville sophomore to record a top-five finish at the 421 Run.

Senior Allyson Martin followed with another milestone, finishing 17th in 27:01 for her first career top-20 finish at the invite.

Junior Mica Gaskey completed Westville’s girls lineup, finishing 28th with a personal best of 35:09.

For Martin, the top-20 result provided a senior-year marker. For Barbahen, it added another early-season accomplishment to a sophomore campaign that is beginning to gather momentum.

But Saturday’s larger story stretched beyond any single runner.

It was Doyle crossing first, Jamieson right behind her and Musgrave delivering a personal best. It was Hutchison breaking 12 minutes and making state-qualifying history for a third straight year. It was the middle school boys producing their best 421 Run finish in program history.

Then Bradney and Barbahen added historic high school performances, while Martin earned her first top-20 finish at the invite.

And through it all stood the Westville middle school girls, 421 Run champions for the second straight year.

A championship. A runner-up finish. State qualifiers. Personal bests. Program firsts.

Westville came to the 421 Run looking to compete.
