A Michiana Life in the Spotlight: Julia Shapiro

Helping people overcome obstacles has been not only a profession but also a lifelong mission for Julia Shapiro. As the owner of Shapiro Consulting LLC, she combines decades of experience in social services, criminal justice and legal document preparation to help clients navigate some of life’s most challenging situations with confidence.

Based in the Michiana region, Shapiro Consulting provides affordable legal document preparation services for individuals who may be seeking assistance with driver’s license reinstatements, criminal expungements, divorce paperwork, and other court-related filings. While not a law firm, the company helps clients understand the process and prepare the necessary documents, often filling a gap for those who cannot afford traditional legal representation.

The path for Shapiro to launch her own business was shaped by both professional experience and personal challenges.

“I grew up in the Michiana area, and from an early age I was drawn to helping people navigate difficult circumstances,” Shapiro said. “That passion led me to pursue a career in social services, where I spent 17 years working with some of the most vulnerable populations in the community.”

Shapiro built an impressive educational background that included an associate’s degree in paralegal studies, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, and a master’s degree in social work.

For seven years, she served as the CEO of an addiction treatment facility, where she gained valuable leadership experience and developed a deeper understanding of systemic barriers.

Throughout her career, Shapiro has repeatedly encountered people who needed legal document assistance but lacked the financial resources to hire an attorney.

“Over time, I saw a consistent gap: people who desperately needed legal document assistance but couldn’t afford an attorney and didn’t know where to turn,” Shapiro said. “That’s what led me to Shapiro Consulting.”

The idea for Shapiro Consulting became even more personal after she experienced her own driver’s license suspension and the reinstatement process that followed.

“I know firsthand how overwhelming, confusing, and discouraging it can be — and I also know how much is riding on getting your license back,” Shapiro said. “You think about your job, your kids, and your independence. When I came out on the other side of that experience, I knew I wanted to use it to help others do the same.”

Combined with her paralegal training and years of social services, starting Shapiro Consulting is something that Shapiro considers more of a calling than a business decision.

Today, Shapiro works with clients from a variety of backgrounds and circumstances. One of the most rewarding aspects of her work is the opportunity to tailor her services to each person’s unique needs.

“What I offer is knowledgeable, affordable document preparation and guidance through the court process so people aren’t left to figure it out alone,” Shapiro said.

Her commitment to serving others is deeply connected to the community Shapiro calls home. She believes the strong sense of connection and service in the Michiana area has helped shape her career and business.

“Michiana is home. This is where I’ve built my career, my relationships, and my sense of purpose,” Shapiro said. “The need here is real and significant. There are hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers with suspended licenses and countless others who need expungements or other legal document help but don’t have the means to hire an attorney. Being here means I can make a tangible difference in a place I genuinely care about.”

Outside of work, Shapiro enjoys riding her motorcycle with friends, attending concerts and traveling to new destinations. Exploring unfamiliar places helps keep her energized and brings a fresh perspective to her professional life.

As her business continues to grow, Shapiro remains focused on expanding access to resources across all 92 Indiana counties for individuals who often feel overlooked by the legal system. Her long-term vision includes becoming a trusted resource for reentry populations throughout Indiana while building partnerships with organizations that share a similar mission.

“The work is just getting started,” Shapiro said. “When we remove barriers — whether it’s a suspended license or a criminal record that’s followed someone for decades — we change trajectories. That’s what drives me every day, and I’m excited about what’s ahead.”
