ArcelorMittal in Northwest Indiana (NWI)
ArcelorMittal, the world's leading steel and mining company, has four locations in the region: two integrated steelmaking facilities, ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor and ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor; a joint venture finishing facility between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel Corporation in New Carlisle, I/N Tek and I/N Kote; and a leading global research center in East Chicago.
Together, these four locations employ nearly 10,000 hardworking men and women, accounting for roughly half of ArcelorMittal's presence in the United States. ArcelorMittal is a significant contributor to the regional and state economies and a major investor in the communities where we operate. ArcelorMittal also manufactures products critical to this region and the state of Indiana, which is recognized as the #1 steel producing state in America. From bridges and cars to washing machines and buildings, steel is the heart of NWI and the product of our future.
Safety - Our top priority
We are committed to providing safe, healthy, quality working lives for our people, our most important asset. Together with the United Steelworkers, we strive to implement best-in-class labor and safety standards for all who work in our facilities. Our employees remain focused and committed to achieving a zero-incident workplace. We aim to create a great place to work by also supporting the general health and wellness of our employees.
Investing $2.6 million in STEM education each year
ArcelorMittal is working diligently to develop a pipeline of talented scientists and engineers for tomorrow. Our work in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is key to achieving this goal. We invest across the educational continuum from early education through university students to promote the importance of engineering education in schools and after school activities. ArcelorMittal has committed to investing more than 40 percent of our annual community investment in STEM.
Protecting NWI with $15 million in conservation projects
We strive to be a trusted user of land, air and water, all essential resources to our communities, ecosystem and our business. We seek to protect and improve the environment through environmental compliance and conservation investments. In recent years, ArcelorMittal has invested more than $15 million in environmental conservation projects. One example is our role in Sustain Our Great Lakes (SOGL), a private-public partnership that supports habitat restoration throughout the Great Lakes basin.
Saving enough energy each year to power 14,000 homes
Steelmaking is an energy-intensive industry and we aim to be a responsible energy user. We find and implement ongoing, innovative solutions to increase the sustainability of our operations, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment, all while saving costs. Last year, we completed 28 energy reduction projects across our operations that saved the company $20 million in energy costs. This savings is equivalent to the cost of powering 14,000 homes in the U.S. for a year. ArcelorMittal is a proud partner of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Plants Program and the U.S. EPA’s Energy Star Program.
