President Harry S. Truman said, “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude.” At Center for Hospice Care we believe that this is never more true than at the end of life.
In an average year, about one quarter of the patients we serve are veterans. Through our veteran-specific programming, our care teams and volunteers receive specialized training to better meet the unique needs of veterans and their families at the end of life. But our dedication to those who served our country doesn’t end with the care we provide. Center for Hospice Care established the Captain Robert J. Hiler Jr. Veterans Memorial at our Mishawaka Campus as a permanent tribute to all the men and women who have served in the military. Community members can memorialize a loved one who is a veteran with a brick or plaque at the memorial. Our veterans memorial is a place where people can come to remember their loved ones, or where a veteran can sit in silence and recall memories from their time in service.
Each year we hold a ceremony to dedicate new items added to the memorial. This year’s ceremony will take place on Tuesday, October 13, and Command Sergeant Major Jordan M. Willsey will serve as the keynote speaker. CSM Willsey enlisted in the Army in 2002 and serves as the senior enlisted soldier in the 380th QM BN, headquartered in Evansville, IN. He currently resides in Mishawaka with his wife and two daughters. Join us to hear about CSM Willsey’s experiences in the military and dedicate the new bricks and plaques.
