VALPARAISO, Indiana — From early June through the final Friday in August, Zao Island transforms into a lakeside music venue, welcoming families and neighbors for its free Summer Concert Series every Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. The open-air events feature a rotating lineup of bands, including Reggae Express, Head Honchos, Breezy Rodio and Dead to Rights, creating a shared soundtrack for summer evenings.
An informal gathering of about 15 neighbors recently attended one of the concerts together. Among them was Linda Werkheiser, who has lived in Valparaiso for four years. She said the group came because neighbors enjoyed the previous week’s concert and simply invited them to join.
“Just that it was outside live music, and come and enjoy,” Werkheiser said.
She called the accessible, family-friendly setup a major draw.
“It’s cost effective you get a free concert, and if you want food or beverages they have great options. It’s an amazing family environment,” Werkheiser said.
Werkheiser added that she plans to bring her two granddaughters to future shows.
“We have two granddaughters, and I can see bringing them here to do everything,” Werkheiser said
Erich Dougall, manager at Zao Island, has overseen the concert series for about five years. He said attendance depends heavily on weather but audiences regularly gather on the lawn and fill the venue by 7 p.m.
“We don’t go too late. We usually wrap up at 10 to keep the noise down for the neighboring area. It’s a three-hour, seven to 10, free show, so why not come,” Dougall said.
Dougall also emphasized the safety and comfort of the venue, which enhances the family atmosphere.
“They feel safe here. It’s a nice, family environment, that’s what we want” Dougall said.
He described the variety of musical performances, pointing out the blend of full-band sets and acoustic shows organized by a local organizer named Rocco.
The musical range helps satisfy varied tastes week to week.
The schedule for 2025 adds structure and anticipation to each summer season. Concerts run every Friday from June 6 through August 30, with notable acts like Head Honchos on June 7 and August 9, Reggae Express on June 21, Breezy Rodio on August 16 and Dead to Rights closing out the series on August 30.
The result is a multi-generational experience where conversation flows as freely as the music and lake breeze. Blankets and chairs spread across the grass, children play nearby, and neighbors connect under string lights.
Werkheiser spoke for many when she said the concerts form a welcoming environment for families and friends.
By offering free admission, vendor food and beverages, and a safe, relaxed setting, Zao Island’s Summer Concert Series does more than entertain. It fosters community connections and brings a sense of neighborhood cohesion every Friday evening.
Under string lights and warm breezes, Zao Island extends a simple yet powerful invitation: come for the music, stay for the community.
