Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana Veterans Build Family Announced

Habitat-for-Humanity-Veterans-Build-Family-AnnouncedHabitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana and the NWI Veterans Action Council introduced the veteran partner family that was selected for their Veterans Build project initiative. The big news was released at a fundraiser designed to raise funds for the project at the Oil City baseball field in Whiting , Ind. on July 1st 2014.

The family is chosen under three criteria. The family must show a need for adequate housing, have the ability to pay a no interest mortgage and a willingness to partner with Habitat. Mr. Danna Carter did just that.

Mr. Danna Carter is a retired disabled veteran and father of two sons. Danya 16 and Dajon 18. Danna joined the service in 1989 and finished his tour of duty in 1993 at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. He served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. While in the service Danna received injuries that left him with complications that effected his health later on. He was declared disabled in 2000. He returned to Northwest Indiana in 2006 with his two young boys to be with family that resides here.

Danna currently lives in an apartment in Portage with his two sons. Paying rent and raising two sons can be a struggle. Danna heard about the program through his father, Jackie Randolph, who is a retired serviceman and also the Senior Vice Commander of the Indiana Amvets. His father told him about the Veterans Build project and he applied.

“When my father told me about the search for a qualifying family, I knew I had to apply”, said Danna. “I am so thankful to have this opportunity. I am finally going to own a home for myself and my sons”.

The build is being planned for late fall and Mr. Carter hopes to reside in Merrillville, Ind. Funding for the project is one third of the way there. The cost of building his Habitat home is $90,000. You can help make this home a reality for the Carter family by becoming a Patriotic Partner for just $120 or $10 a month. One hundred percent of the money raised goes towards the Veterans Build home. Your generous contributions will build a new home for this deserving family right here in Northwest Indiana.
