While it’s important to have fun with friends and family members, the number one priority to making that happen relies on our health. Everyone goes through difficult times each year, which is what makes our wellbeing so important.
In 2025, we covered health topics such as health fairs, pediatricians, healthcare symposiums, children’s health, and more. We partner with plenty of organizations, businesses, and healthcare groups each year to promote wellness and ensure that the local communities stay healthy.
In no particular order, here are the top 10 health articles on NWI.Life to recap the good news in 2025!

Over the past six months, Dr. Bryan Robins has worked as a general surgeon at Methodist Hospitals, lending his expertise about colon and rectal cases to enhance patients’ health and overall quality of life through treatment and surgery. Robins has known from a young age that he wanted to work in medicine.
“I had some experiences in childhood where I had a rash of broken bones – some that required surgery, some that didn’t – and I was in and out of my orthopedic surgeon’s office a lot. That’s where my interest in medicine was born,” Robins said.

Powers Health closed out American Heart Month with Innovative Cardiovascular Procedures: A Hearts of Hope Event. This free event gave attendees an opportunity to learn about the latest innovations in treating heart conditions from leading experts: Interventional Cardiologist Anas Safadi, MD; Electrophysiologist Samer Ajam, MD; and Samer Abbas, MD, Powers Health’s Cardiovascular Service Line Co-Director and Structural Heart and Valve Clinic Medical Director.

Legacy Foundation brought together more than 100 people in Lake County for an important health-related conversation on Friday, March 21. The organization hosted its “Let’s Talk Food” event, featuring three panelists from different organizations discussing the biggest issues in the food system today with the attendees.

With summer break and a new school year on the horizon, it’ll soon be time for children to head in for yearly physicals, check-ups, and other medical assessments before classes resume in the fall. While it may seem like an overwhelming task at first for families to get their child’s appointments under wraps in just a few short months, there is a way to help calm the chaos while keeping the child’s health and well-being the utmost priority – and it all starts with a visit to a medical home.

The lights dimmed and the music built to a crescendo as five women jogged to the theater stage at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster. Dressed in workout gear, they led nearly 250 women in chair Zumba, a seated version of the popular high-energy dance fitness program.
It was the kickoff to a day of self-care for women attending the Empowering Women’s Retreat on April 26. Hosted by Powers Health, the annual free event was designed to support women in prioritizing care for their mind and body.

The Breast Care Center at Methodist Hospitals allows women of Northwest Indiana to receive some of the most personalized, high-quality breast health evaluations in the Region. While the facility has a plethora of programs that can better the chances of combating breast cancer in women, there are a couple of partner organizations that allow the Breast Care Center to maximize the care provided to the patients.

At Midwest Center for Youth and Families, nursing is about more than monitoring patient health – it’s about coaching, educating, and building the rapport necessary to contribute to long-term healing. For youths and adolescents with complex mental health needs at the center, the nursing team is a constant presence on their path to wellness.

For Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Kaela Funches, the path to medicine wasn’t a practical choice so much as a personal calling. At 17, a health scare that resolved easily for her took a tragic turn for her cousin, showing her firsthand the difference dedicated nurses can make on patients and their families.
“When I was 17, my cousin and I both injured our knees,” she said. “I ended up having a sprain, she ended up being found to have cancer, and she died from it in senior year. I was introduced to a bunch of lovely nurses who helped take care of her, and that inspired me to do nursing.”

On Tuesday, September 30, Methodist Hospitals came together with the Schererville Chamber of Commerce, Crossroads Chamber, and the Saint John Chamber of Commerce to celebrate a ribbon-cutting ceremony honoring the new Specialty Center and a relocation of the CareFirst Immediate Care location for Methodist Hospital in Schererville.
