The women of Everwise Credit Union: A history of growth, commitment, and success

March is Women’s History Month, a time to reflect on the generations of women whose contributions have shaped our communities, institutions, and culture. This year, we’re taking a closer look at Everwise Credit Union. An organization whose story of women’s leadership stretches back nearly a century and continues to define how they do business today.

Since its beginning in 1931, Everwise Credit Union has maintained strong representation of women throughout its organization—from employees and managers to executives, vice presidents, and board leaders. From founding member Alice Craft to the women serving in leadership roles across the organization today, Everwise is proud of the lasting impact women have made in helping the credit union serve nearly 300,000 members.

Their story began in 1931, when a small group of teachers banded together to create a credit union during the challenges of the Great Depression. The organization’s original charter was signed by eight people – six of whom were women  – setting a tone of inclusion and shared leadership that has endured for more than 90 years.

Since that time, women have remained instrumental in Everwise’s growth and evolution. Their dedication has helped shape the credit union’s values of wisdom, drive, inclusion, and a strong people-first culture.

“Women have shaped the soul of Everwise – from the six founding signers who had the courage to build something together, to the leaders across our organization today who ensure our people and our members are always at the center of every decision we make,” said Chief Human Resources Officer Nancy Engelmann. “That continuity of care is what makes our people-first culture real, not just aspirational.”

Today, women make up a significant portion of Everwise’s managers, branch staff, and organizational leaders. Women serve throughout all leadership levels of the credit union, including executive roles and the Board of Directors, and are a vital part of Everwise’s workforce overall. The credit union remains committed to providing equitable opportunities for growth and advancement for all employees.

Programs such as Everwise’s EmpowerHer Employee Resource Group help strengthen those commitments by fostering connection, mentorship, and professional development. Initiatives like participation in the She L.E.A.D.S. Conference further support women in developing their leadership skills and expanding their impact.

While Women’s History Month shines a special spotlight on these achievements, Everwise celebrates the contributions of women every day. From leaders guiding the organization’s direction to frontline employees supporting members and community partners, women remain central to Everwise’s success and community impact.

“I’m proud to be part of an organization where women’s leadership isn’t a milestone to celebrate once a year – it’s simply how we do business,” Engelmann said.

With nearly a century of progress built on inclusion and trust, Everwise is honored to recognize the women who have helped create a space where people truly come first.

Everwise Credit Union offers employees equal opportunities to grow and advance. The credit union works hard to support hardworking people with a person-first mentality.
