The Lerner Theatre’s volunteer program brings positive energy and professionalism

Located in the heart of downtown Elkhart since 1924, the Lerner Theatre has more moving parts than what audience members see on stage. Behind the scenes, volunteers are helping the theatre provide memorable experiences for attendees, while simultaneously keeping everything running smoothly.

Volunteer Coordinator and Group Sales Coordinator Therese Geise has been working with the Lerner Theatre for over 13 years. Originally beginning as a volunteer herself, Geise continued to work at the theatre in different capacities, including in the box office selling tickets and as a floor manager, before being offered the volunteer coordinator position. The staff and patrons, the connections she formed, and the theatre, overall being a great environment is what made her continue returning.

“Whether you’re working, volunteering, or a patron, it’s just a fun place and a fun environment,” Geise said.

The Lerner Theatre volunteer program is supported by the theatre’s mission to provide added value to each guests’ experience. Volunteers can sign up online by filling out the form and work a variety of shifts at the theatre, including being a coat checker, will call runner, lobby greeter, ticket scanner, and elevator operator. Usually there will be between 15 to 20 volunteers working a show, and they will also help ushers with cleaning up after a show. While bringing energy and professionalism to the theatre, volunteers are there to help and guide guests successfully during an event.

When hiring, the theatre looks for someone with a heart for service, a positive attitude, and an outgoing personality. Volunteers must be able to stand on their feet for long periods of time and be at least 18 years old, but Geise sees a range of ages in volunteering. Not only does the volunteer program help with the financial side for the theatre, but volunteers themselves can see personal benefits.

“Being retired, maybe you have lost your spouse, or you’re a retired couple — these volunteers enjoy coming, getting out of the house, seeing new faces, visiting amongst themselves,” Geise said. “It gives them something to do and a purpose.”

However, the volunteer’s work goes beyond the shows. The Sunshine Committee at the theatre sends greeting, birthday, and ‘thinking of you’ cards. Some volunteers also deliver quarter-page flyers to the local grocery store to market for upcoming shows. Volunteers can also help with Crystal Ballroom events at the theatre, which can include large banquets and weddings.

Even if this is an individual’s first time volunteering, the Peer Mentor Program offers guidance during shifts from veteran volunteers. With 80 volunteers currently, Geise’s goal is to have around 100 volunteers. She encourages new and young volunteers to spread the word, so that the program continues to grow and thrive.

“I’m proud of what we are building together as a team to be successful and have wonderful guest experiences when the patrons come,” Geise said. “I get many, many ‘thanks’ as the patrons are leaving about how wonderful the volunteers are.”
