Survivor Series: Michelle Veld

For months, Michelle Veld put off going to the doctor despite having a lot of pain. When Veld decided to go to the doctor, the first doctor she saw told her she was fine. This was despite x-rays and a thorough exam.

“I knew I wasn’t fine,” she said. “I was in tears because of the pain and I knew something was not right, so I continued.”

Veld visited another doctor who discovered colorectal cancer stage III after a colonoscopy.

“It just goes to show you to listen to your body,” Veld said. “If I would have stopped at the first doctor, I would be dead.”

Veld will never forget the moment she was told she had cancer.

“It changes your world as soon as you hear news like that,” she said. “I have three kids, and I just kept thinking of my children.”

The cancer was officially discovered in 2019. Immediately after it was discovered, Veld was put on chemotherapy. She then went through several rounds of radiation for six weeks. In February of 2020, she had all of the cancer removed and was declared cancer free.

“I basically was deemed cancer free after about a year of chemo, radiation, and the surgery,” she said. “It was approximately six years ago around this time.”

Veld is always trying to spread the word to get checked regularly for cancer. Frequent screenings and listening to your body are so important.

“It’s not always fun to talk about, but I’m very detailed and raw with my story because I want to protect others,” she said. “Anything I can do to save lives is worth it to me.”

It was later discovered that Veld’s lymph nodes were full of cancer.

“They had to take a lot of my lymph nodes because of this,” Veld said.

Today, Veld and her family are doing great. She is active and involved. In fact, the family is headed on a vacation for spring break to enjoy time together.

“I always cherish our time together,” Veld said. “Especially after everything that happened.”

Veld is not only an inspiration for fighting cancer, but an advocate as well. Surely many will learn from her story as she continues to tell it.
