St. Joseph County Public Library encourages friendly competition for Michiana photographers

The St. Joseph County Public Library hosts its 27th annual Life in Michiana Photography Contest to capture the heart of the region. The competition encourages residents to submit photos for a chance to win prizes, display their work, and spotlight Michiana’s unique beauty.

Animals – Zzzzzzzz by Joseph Waters

“The goal is to capture the heart of Michiana and see the area through the community’s eyes,” said Rachael Zeiger, the community engagement assistant manager. “Life in Michiana invites the community to share photos that showcase what makes our area unique and beautiful.”

The Life in Michiana Photography Contest invites prospective photographers of all ages and skill levels to highlight what makes Michiana home. From November 14 to January 9, photographers may submit their best work to five choice categories: animals, people, places, happenings, and still life.

“Everybody has to start somewhere,” Zeiger said. “The competition is open to everybody, whether you’re a professional or a first-time photographer. It is a fun competition that highlights our local community. It is low pressure and really fun.”

Photographers are invited to submit their work digitally via the St. Joseph County Public Library’s website. After January 9, judging begins with library staff conducting the initial review before the entries are passed to a panel of professional, local photographers. The judges evaluate each photo on a one-to-five scale. The top 20 submissions feature four finalists and one winner per category who will earn a spot in the library’s main gallery exhibit.

“We are looking at the photos to see if they bring a unique eye that highlights the simple beauties of South Bend,” Zeiger said. “It is so hard to pick every year, but we love seeing all of the great photos.”

The library will announce winners on Thursday, February 12 at 5:30 p.m. EST. The reception will take place in the second-floor gallery of its main downtown South Bend location. Winners will receive a gift card to Gene’s Camera Store.

Places – Beaming Up by Neal Walerko

“It is really cool to see everybody at the reception because everyone celebrates each other and they highlight everybody’s work,” Zeiger said. “They are excited to see all of the great photography in the area. Most of the time, it has a cool, community vibe.”

Beyond the photography contest, the St. Joseph County Public Library remains committed to connecting residents to learn resources and culture. The library provides free access to materials through physical and digital collections, including Libby and Kanopy. Cardholders can check out Discovery Passes for free entries to six local attractions, including the Studebaker National Museum. The library further keeps all programs and events free for every community member.

“The mission is to connect members of our diverse community to learning resources, culture, and each other,” Zeiger said. “We value trust, respect, equity and inclusion, collaboration, sustainability, and optimism.”
