South Bend’s Carl Hetler Receives IHCDA Trailblazer Award

The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) recently recognized Carl Hetler of the City of South Bend with its prestigious Trailblazer Award, honoring his outstanding leadership and commitment to strengthening communities across Indiana.

Hetler was recognized for his collaborative approach to advancing housing stability and improving opportunities for residents. Throughout his career, he has built strong partnerships with local organizations, government agencies, and community leaders to address housing challenges and create lasting solutions.

REAL Services President and CEO KJ Mapes, who nominated Hetler for the award, praised both his leadership and his unwavering commitment to serving others. “Carl personifies the spirit of Community Action,” said Mapes. “His dedication to collaboration and his genuine desire to improve the lives of others have made a lasting impact throughout Michiana. He brings people together, finds solutions, and inspires those around him to do the same.”

The award was presented during the Indiana Community Action Conference in French Lick, where community leaders from across the state gathered to celebrate innovation, partnership, and service.

“It was especially meaningful to celebrate Carl alongside Community Action colleagues and partners from across Indiana,” Community Action Program Officer LaTonia Newhouse, added. “His work show what truly can be accomplished when organizations and communities work together toward a common goal.”
