South Bend Community School Corporation, in partnership with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, will host its annual Back to School Bash from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Clay High School.
The free event will bring families together with school supplies, health services and community resources ahead of the first day of school on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
Students can receive free backpacks filled with school supplies, vaccinations provided by the St. Joseph County Department of Health and haircuts from Great Clips. Through the district’s partnership with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, 400 pairs of new shoes will also be available to students on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Our goal is to remove some of the barriers our families may be facing and make sure students have a great and memorable first day of school,” said Taylor Williams, Supervisor of Student Services for South Bend Community School Corporation. “Back-to-school expenses can add up quickly for families. We want them to know that we’re here to support the whole family and help make that transition into the new school year a little easier.”
More than 30 community organizations and vendors will participate in the event, giving families an opportunity to learn about additional programs, services and resources available in the South Bend community.
The event will also help students begin thinking about life after high school. Representatives from colleges, universities and career fields will be available to discuss education and career opportunities. INvestEd will assist students and families with questions about scholarships, financial aid, choosing a major and planning for college and careers.
The Back to School Bash is free and open to South Bend Schools students and families.
