South Bend Cubs welcomes Nitro Circus 2.0 back to Four Winds Field

Nitro Circus, a global sports entertainment leader, made its way back to South Bend on Thursday, August 13. The show was hosted at Four Winds Field, home of the South Bend Cubs.

Co-founded in 2003 by Travis Pastrana, Nitro Circus has been a growing multi-platform, entertainment brand that has created live events, competitions, television programming, and digital offerings. Nitro Circus has sold more than three million tickets, airing across 60 different countries.

While Four Winds Field is known primarily as a place to enjoy a ballgame, the facility has evolved in recent years to bring in some unique events that can satisfy people of all ages and interests.

“We have 66 home baseball games, but we recognize that not everybody is a baseball fan. Not all of our events are tied to baseball, but that’s a big draw. When we do concerts or an event like the Nitro Circus, we’re getting a crowd of people that may not normally come out,” said President of the South Bend Cubs, Joe Hart. “If they come out for these kinds of events, we hope that they’ll see how great of a facility we have here and want to come back for a baseball game.”

Nitro Circus works with not only athletes, but also daredevils. Athletes come from all backgrounds and participate in freestyle motocross (FMX), bicycle motocross (BMX), skate, scooter, and more. These events showcase a display of risk-taking in action sports as a way to ensure the crowd is captivated and inspired.

“It’s a different vibe, the Nitro Circus. There’s something about the sound of the motorcycles that gets you excited,” said Hart. “It’s crazy to think about what these guys go out and do day in and day out. It’s a lot of fun and very high energy. Unlike baseball, with your half-inning breaks and all that, this is continuous and very go, go, go.”

More than 100 stunts were performed by over 20 athletes at the event. While the Nitro Circus has made its way to South Bend before, the constant exhilaration that attendees left the event with last time made it an easy decision to bring it back for another year.

“Back in 2022, when everyone was getting back out after COVID, they performed here. It was a fun event then, and still is. Whether you’re a motorcycle person or not, when you see the stunts they’re doing, it’s impressive,” said Hart. “They’re visiting 14 or 15 minor league baseball stadiums during their tour, and we’re lucky enough to be one of them. A lot of that has to do with the experience they had back in 2022.”

This year’s show featured a series of high-risk stunts. Adam Jones attempted a 75-foot backflip through a 35-foot wall of fire. Ryan Bean dived over 40 feet into a water pool that was only 3.5 feet deep. Cody Matechuk launched a snowmobile off a brand-new Levi ramp. Plenty of fan-favorite contraptions made a return with new, perilous surprises.

With the Nitro Circus bringing fire to the field, this event gave people some insight on the different experiences that people can expect at Four Winds Field.

“When people visit Four Winds Fields, we hope they leave thinking, ‘Wow, I didn’t expect to see that at a ballpark,’” Hart said.

Grindtime Indiana Pro Wrestling, formerly known as Revolution Championship Wrestling, will be returning to Four Winds Field as the next major event on Saturday, August 29.

“We have 12 regular season games left, and we won the first half. The playoff game is happening on September 10th, which is a Thursday. It’s going to be a Thirsty Thursday event,” said Hart. “We look forward to people coming out and celebrating with us as we hit the playoff run, and hopefully we win another championship.”
