Purdue University Northwest cuts the ribbon on Calumet Hall student residence center

On Tuesday, Aug. 4, Purdue University Northwest previewed its new Calumet Hall student
residence facility through a celebratory ribbon-cutting, marking new opportunities for student
residents’ on-campus living and learning experiences.
Calumet Hall, which was constructed on the corner of 173rd Street and Woodmar Avenue on
the PNW Hammond campus, will bring students closer to the center of campus life. Student
residents will be minutes away from their classes and other key offices and resources.

Kenneth C. Holford, Purdue University Northwest chancellor, shared his excitement for how
Calumet Hall is a direct reflection of the university community’s commitment to supporting the
experiences that shape and benefit PNW students inside and outside the classroom.
“Calumet Hall is a reflection of our continued investment in our students, our campus and the
future of the university,” Holford said. “This is a great example of us continuing to take steps to
change the lives of our students.”
On-campus residence facilities offer more than simply a place for students to live. The
communities that grow within offer valuable opportunities for students to grow their collaboration
and leadership with peers. From attending events together to group study sessions, a network
of support develops that enhances students’ sense of belonging at PNW and their preparation
for their future professional roles.
“I went to college for a long time,” Holford said, referring to his academic background with
advanced degrees. “Some of my best memories are of the lifelong friendships that I still have
today, and the community that was part of the campus experience. Today, we’re extending that
experience for our students. We remain focused on creating spaces that support our students’
success and innovation, and strengthen our role as an anchor institution for Northwest Indiana. I
look forward to seeing the community, traditions and memories that will take shape within these
walls for generations to come.”
PNW’s completion of Calumet Hall is a strategic project in direct response to increased student
demand for on-campus living and learning opportunities. In fall 2025, PNW’s department of
Housing and Residential Education reported a fourth consecutive year of waitlists for the
university’s other two student housing buildings, Griffin and Peregrine halls.
City of Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr., a PNW alumnus who has closely watched the
university’s transformation during his time in office, shared his excitement that the university is
prioritizing student experiences and resources, such as student housing.
“This new residence hall is another step in the transformation that’s taking place at PNW. This is
the third residence hall to open during my time as mayor, and that’s not just a sign of growth for
PNW, but for the city of Hammond as well,” McDermott said.

Calumet Hall is a three-story, 42,000-square-foot building that will provide 150 beds through a
mix of single- and double-occupancy rooms. Student residents will also be provided a common
kitchen, laundry facilities and lounge spaces.
