Prospective and incoming students get first taste of Indiana University Northwest at annual Fall Open House

Indiana University (IU) Northwest welcomed incoming and prospective students to its campus this Saturday during the university’s Fall Open House. The annual event gives students an opportunity to learn about everything Indiana University Northwest has to offer, from its robust degree programs to its active student life scene.

“The open house is great because you can get a little taste of everything Indiana University Northwest has to offer, from student activities to admissions. Attendees can see our amazing programs, like our Radiography program, our Nursing program, our College of Arts and Sciences, and our Fine Arts program. They can see where their likes and dislikes lie and what they are passionate about. It helps students get an idea of where they feel comfortable,” Director of Admissions Erin Zak said. 

Students gathered in the Savannah Center to learn more about the over 70 degree programs they could take part in during their time at Indiana University Northwest. The university has a long-standing academic tradition that not only encourages students to grow as individuals but also provides them with the tools, connections, and opportunities necessary to succeed when they leave campus and enter the workforce.

“The benefits of a non-residential campus allow our students to experience a lot of different things, like awesome college-level experiences, while getting an affordable degree. That’s the beauty of Indiana University Northwest.” 

Faculty and students from a variety of Indiana University Northwest’s programs were on site to answer questions and provide more information about attending Indiana University Northwest, including representatives from student clubs and athletics. Prospective students were also able to tour the campus and feel the college experience for themselves.

Indiana University Northwest has long championed making higher education affordable and accessible. During the open house, those interested in learning more about attending the university were able to receive important information regarding financial aid and scholarship opportunities that make attending Indiana University Northwest an option for all. Additionally, prospective students were able to apply on the spot with waived application fees.

“Students get an Indiana University degree and leave here with very little to no debt, and that’s fantastic. Hopefully, students stay in the Region, but they can take their IU degree anywhere because it is recognized worldwide,” said Zak. 

Samuel Eko, a soon to be graduate from Munster High School, is thinking about attending Indiana University Northwest next fall. 

“I’m definitely intrigued by Indiana University Northwest. They may have the program I’m looking for, which is Pre-Physical Therapy. If I do decide to come here, I would be most excited about the sense of camaraderie and community that’s offered here,” said Eko. “Knowing that people are looking for you is nice.” 

As the open house came to a close, many students walked away with a better grasp of their upcoming college experience as well as anticipation to begin the next chapter of their academic journey.

“What is really great right now in America is that we are seeing a resurgence of people wanting to go to college again,” said Zak. “Making sure that people see the beauty of coming to a place of higher education and getting them to attend here is really awesome. We want to make sure that people know we’re affordable and accessible to anyone; that also makes us stand out in the community.”
