Powers Health, community members memorialize loved ones at St. Catherine Hospital’s Wings of Healing event

Powers Health hosted its annual Wings of Healing tree lighting ceremony earlier this month in St. Catherine Hospital’s chapel. The annual tradition honors loved ones alongside the community, giving attendees a chance to connect with others during the holiday season.

The ceremony began with a brief introduction followed by a prayer, led by Deacon Mike Halas. For many, the annual event has become a tradition as Christmas approaches.

“We see all of the merriment and joy found within our community, but deep within us, each and every one of us is hurting because a very special person is missing,” St. Catherine Hospital Board President Edward Williams said. “They’re missing, but they’re forever exemplified by the presence we present to them by hanging their memories on this very special tree.”

Wings of Healing has been a staple event for Powers Health for the past three decades. Attendees are able to donate money in memory of passed loved ones to continue the legacy of love left by their passing. For $15, attendees could place an angel ornament on the decorated Christmas tree as well as receive a personalized card. The money raised is used to support the St. Catherine Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Fund, which helps students pursue higher education in healthcare.

“Wings of Healing is one of our great traditions at St. Catherine Hospital. For three decades, we’ve come together as co-workers, friends and family during the holidays to remember and honor our loved ones,” said Nina Stur, St. Catherine Hospital chief nursing officer and VP of Patient Care Services. “We use this moment to reflect on those who have touched our lives.”

Patricia Turpin has been attending the Wings of Healing event since 2009, shortly after her mother passed away. She attended this year’s event with her sister to honor her mother, father and several other loved ones.

“We’ve done this since 2009 – since our mother died,” Turpin said. “It’s emotional for us, and Powers Health does a very good job.”

Attendees placed their ornaments on the tree as names of the honorees were read. Once all of the ornaments were in place, the tree was lit. Guests stood close together as they sang “Silent Night” in both English and Spanish to close out the ceremony. 

“Christmas is not in all of the commercialism, the trees, the food or the festivities. The real spirit of Christ’s love and Christmas is found in each of us,” Williams said. “Let us leave here today with conviction and purpose. Let us leave here today to share God’s love. That’s what he intended for us during this Christmas season.”

Wings of Healing concludes Powers Health’s kick off to the Christmas season, but those looking to continue the cheer by supporting the St. Catherine Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Fund can donate online.
