NorthShore Health Centers celebrates Dr. Tipton and how he serves his patients

Dr. Matthew Tipton grew up in Northwest Indiana and now he’s back working and living in his hometown where he grew up. In fact, he’s back in the community in which he was raised delivering babies at the very hospital at which he was born.

Dr. Tipton serves as the Chief OBGYN at Methodist Hospital and also holds a leadership role at the NorthShore Health Centers location in Gary.

Dr. Tipton attended the University of Notre Dame where he earned his undergraduate degree in 2009. He later earned his master’s degree at Hampton University before attending medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

After medical school, Dr. Tipton returned to the Midwest for his residency, which he completed at Loyola University in Chicago.

“Even when I started medical school and before, I knew I always wanted to be an OBGYN,” said Dr. Tipton. “There are so many facets of medicine, but I always knew that I wanted to be an OBGYN.”

One of the main reasons Dr. Tipton wanted to be an OBGYN was because of the long-term nature of the work involved with patent care in this area of medicine.

“As an OBGYN, you create a long-term relationship with the patient,” he said. “You care for the mother for nine months throughout her pregnancy and sometimes even before depending on the situation. After the birth of the baby, you continue to work with the mother for post-labor care and cultivate that very important relationship.”

Dr. Tipton also loved that this area of medicine offered the opportunity to technically be a surgeon, but without the additional years of education typically required of a surgeon.

“You can be a surgeon, but you don’t need the extra degree,” he said.

Most of all, Dr. Tipton wanted to go into obstetrics because it gave him the opportunity to deliver babies.

“It’s a special privilege to deliver babies and help bring a new life into the world,” he said.

Dr. Tipton grew up with many wonderful women in his life, including his own mother and several sisters.

“The women in my life are very important to me,” said Dr. Tipton said. “I love and adore women and I think they are a strong species. Women are amazing!”

Returning to his hometown to practice medicine has been very special for Dr. Tipton.

“It’s been a blessing to be back where I grew up and it’s been a blessing to deliver babies where I was born,” he said.

With a leader like Dr. Tipton who appreciates his work, his family, his patients, and the Northwest Indiana area, he is at the helm of obstetric care at NorthShore Health Centers.
