New Habitat for Humanity Home Dedicated on May 4th

Habitat-for-HumanityLaPorte County Habitat for Humanity celebrated the construction of its 48th home at a dedication ceremony Sunday, May 4, at 216 Worden Street, LaPorte. The new homeowners, The Brittany Collett family, thanked all those who worked so hard to help them reach this goal.

The Collett family performed more than 500 sweat equity hours working on their home and the homes of others as a requirement for becoming Habitat homeowners. Joy Schmitt, LaPorte County Habitat Vice President presented the family with a Bible during the dedication. Habitat Board members, volunteers, and members of the Terra Verde Garden Club joined the Collett family in the celebration. Mike Meyer represented the group of volunteers from St. John’s Christian Church, Archbold, Ohio, who worked on the project last summer.

Through donations of money and materials and volunteer labor, LaPorte County Habitat for Humanity was able to build the home and sell it at an affordable price. The Collett family purchased the home with a no-interest loan, and their monthly mortgage payments will be used to build more Habitat houses. LaPorte resident Steve Nelson served as construction manager on the project.

“We want to thank everyone – volunteers, vendors, donors, and organizations—that had a hand in making this home a reality,” noted Bob Long, Executive Director. “A special thank you goes to the Matthew F. Moore Foundation, which contributed funds in memory of Colonel Matthew J. Moore to the project.”

Construction projects for 2014 will be underway soon, Long noted.
