Methodist Hospital Spotlight: Dr. Samantha Agar

As a family medicine physician, Dr. Samantha Agar provides care for patients across their lifespan, from newborns to older adults, serving the entire family.

Originally from Canada, Dr. Agar completed most of her education there before continuing her medical career in the United States. Dr. Agar brings a strong academic background to her role. Before joining Methodist Hospital, she worked at Southern Illinois University, where she taught medical residents and practiced at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

“It was a unique experience,” Agar said. “As a residency program, we oversaw all the residents and managed our own patients in the hospital. We had an inpatient team, so patients from our practice would be admitted to our service. Faculty rotated daily with the residents, which created a very collaborative environment.”

Dr. Agar transitioned to Methodist Hospitals from her role in Illinois, describing the move as both smooth and positive.

“It’s been a very welcoming community,” she said. “Everyone has been incredibly receptive, especially as I stepped in to take over Dr. Zack’s existing practice after he retired. Dr. Zack cared for many loyal patients, some for 20 or 30 years.”

Relocating to Indiana for the first time, Dr. Agar now lives with her family in Crown Point. “We’ve been really impressed,” Agar said. “There are so many families, everyone has been welcoming, and the schools are excellent. We truly appreciate what the community has to offer, even as we miss parts of where we lived before.”

Dr. Agar and her husband, also a physician at Methodist Hospitals, have three young children. The couple met during their rotations at the University of Chicago. “My husband is an electrophysiologist,” she said. “It’s great working at the same hospital. We’re often able to coordinate our schedules so we can spend more time with our kids.”

Though she has been at Methodist Hospitals for less than a year, Dr. Agar has already made a meaningful impact on her patients.
