Martin Briggs of La Porte Community School Corporation Selected as Top 3 Finalist for 2026 Indiana Teacher of the Year

La Porte Community School Corporation is proud to announce that Martin Briggs has been selected as one of three finalists for the prestigious 2026 Indiana Teacher of the Year award. The Indiana Department of Education delivered the news through a surprise classroom visit to Crichfield Elementary School this afternoon. 

Mr. Briggs, who has dedicated 47 years to educating students within La Porte Community School Corporation, has advanced from seven finalists to the final three candidates. The Indiana Department of Education officials observed his classroom lesson before delivering the exceptional news.

“We are incredibly proud of Mr. Briggs and this well-deserved recognition as a top three finalist for Indiana Teacher of the Year. His decades of service to our students and community exemplify the very best of our profession,” said Superintendent Sandra Wood. “Marty’s innovative teaching methods, his commitment to hands-on learning, and his impact on generations of students make him a true ambassador for education. This honor not only celebrates his exceptional career but also reflects the quality and dedication of all our educators throughout the district. We wish him the very best as he represents La Porte Community School Corporation in Indianapolis.” 

Mr. Briggs previously received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 2014 and is renowned for his hands-on, cross-curricular projects and international work, which includes training educators in Belize. His influence extends far beyond the classroom, having positively impacted generations of students throughout his distinguished career. 

The educator will travel to Indianapolis on Monday to represent La Porte Community School Corporation in the final portion of the selection process. The Indiana Teacher of the Year Program works to inspire, rejuvenate, and celebrate the teaching profession by recognizing outstanding educators from across the state. 

The 2026 Indiana Teacher of the Year winner will be announced following the completion of the final selection process.
