The City of La Porte Fire Department today announced Captain Zach Kanney will take over as the new Assistant Chief, according to Fire Chief Andy Snyder.
Kanney will replace former Assistant Chief Kelly Burke, who recently stepped down from the position. An 18-year veteran of the department, Kanney has held the title of Captain for 3 years and has also served as training chief as well as a member of the dive team. With his experience and leadership skills, Snyder said he believes Kanney will do well in this new role.
“For nearly two decades, Zach has been an incredible asset to our department,” Snyder said. “Between his many years of valuable experience and the leadership skills he possesses, I know he will thrive in this new role. We congratulate him and are eager to see what he will bring to this position.”
Kanney comes from a large family of career firefighters. A lifelong resident of La Porte, he and his wife Erica have been married for 15 years and together have 4 children.
Burke will fulfill his role through the end of the year before taking the rank of Battalion Chief. Snyder said Kanney will be sworn in during the Board of Public Works & Safety meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
