Korellis is well known for the resources they offer to beginners entering the roofing industry, such as a comprehensive four-year apprenticeship program and a state-of-the-art Training Center. However, they are just as much a destination for veterans in the industry, qualified experts already carrying years of experience under their belts.
Troy Lawmaster is one of these veterans, having spent over 30 years as a roofer prior to joining Korellis in 2018. At the time, he was looking for a new stage for his career and had heard about Korellis through word of mouth and even met some of their team on occasion. He liked what he heard about their employee-first philosophy and decided to take a chance – even with a lengthy commute.
“It was a little bit of a drive for me, but I wasn’t worried about that,” he said. “Korellis just seemed like the right fit, so I thought ‘well, let’s give it a shot.’ They looked at my resume, saw my background experience, told me they were pleased to have me on and welcomed me like I’d been part of their team for years.”
Right away, Lawmaster saw Korellis’ focus on employee success and well-being in action – first and foremost in their approach to safety.
“Keeping us safe is their main concern, they never want anyone in harm’s way at all,” he said. “If there’s inclement weather or anything like that, they’d rather have the guys stay home and be safe than take their chances being out in the field.”
One of the more unique things Lawmaster noticed was Korellis’ willingness to listen to their team member’s feedback and find ways to improve their quality of life while out on job sites.
“If we need something, they’re more than willing to go out of their way and get it done,” he said. “They’ll do what it takes to make the job go easier, smoother, and safer.”
To Lawmaster, the most impressive thing about Korellis is their commitment to caring for their employees as people – and that means taking care of their families as well. In 2020, Korellis asked Lawmaster to spend some time in Texas working on project for the Department of Energy and took every step to make sure it was as comfortable an experience as possible.
“They’d fly my wife down to visit, or fly me home for a weekend,” he said. “The other guys all said the same thing, they’d fly their girlfriends and significant others down just to make sure we all had family time. It’s all family-oriented here.”
